Good News Everyone? More Like Bad News Everyone!
Alright meatbags Leela here your one eyed purveyor of truth (mostly). Turns out Samsung the tech giant from way over in Korea land is predicting a profit drop of 56%. 56 PERCENT! That's worse than when Fry tries to cook! Apparently they're not getting as much action in the AI chip market as they'd like. You know those fancy chips that make robots smarter than Bender… which admittedly isn't saying much.
Nvidia's Got All the Juice!
The big issue seems to be that Samsung's having trouble keeping up with the demand from Nvidia the overlords of AI chips. Seems like SK Hynix is the popular kid hogging all the Nvidia love. Apparently the high bandwidth memory chips or HBM as the cool kids call them are the real deal. And Samsung's a little…behind. Like Fry trying to understand quantum physics behind. MS Hwang some research director type says the problem is Samsung's foundry business is losing money and their HBM business isn't exactly booming.
Hynix is Living Large While Samsung is Eating Bachelor Chow
Word on the street is that SK Hynix has locked down a sweet gig as Nvidia's main supplier. Samsung's been trying to get their latest HBM chips approved by Nvidia but there are rumors it's been delayed until September. September! That's like waiting for Nibbler to finish his… business. Samsung's not talking of course. Probably too busy trying to figure out how to bribe Nvidia with free Galaxy phones.
AMD to the Rescue? Not So Fast!
Ray Wang from Futurum Group (which sounds suspiciously like a company run by robots) says Samsung hasn't passed Nvidia's test for their most advanced HBM. Since Nvidia controls about 70% of the HBM demand this is a big problem. Samsung did manage to score some deals with AMD but Wang says it won't help their second quarter results. Sounds like someone's gonna be chugging Slurm to cope.
TSMC is Kicking Sand in Samsung's Face
To add insult to injury Samsung's chip foundry is facing stiff competition from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company or TSMC which sounds like a dance club. Oh and remember that rumor about Samsung cutting staff? Yeah some divisions had to slash 30% of their workforce. That's rougher than a game of Blernsball.
Is Samsung Going to End Up in the Head Museum?
Despite all this doom and gloom Samsung's stock is up 16% this year. Go figure. They'll be releasing their full results later this month. Let's hope it's not as bad as the time Fry accidentally drank the Emperor's brain fluid. Until then keep your tentacles crossed and maybe buy a Samsung phone… just in case they need the cash.
