The Donald Strikes Again! Giggity Giggity!
Oh good heavens! It appears that tangerine tinted titan Donald Trump has decided to throw another wrench into the already perplexing gears of global trade. This time he's brandishing the threat of a 10% tariff on any country 'aligning themselves with the anti American policies of BRICS.' Anti American policies you say? Quelle horreur! What's next are they going to start serving tea without crumpets? Oh the indignity!
BRICS: A Rogue's Gallery of... Well Something!
For those of you who haven't been keeping up with the geopolitical shenanigans (and let's be honest who has the time when there are martinis to be mixed?) BRICS is a little club consisting of Brazil Russia India China South Africa Saudi Arabia Egypt United Arab Emirates Ethiopia Indonesia and Iran. Apparently they're all about 'improving economic political and social cooperation.' Sounds suspiciously like a plot to overthrow the world order. Or maybe just a book club. I haven't decided yet.
Xi Jinping Skips Out. Smart move!
Adding to the drama Chinese President Xi Jinping decided to send his second in command Premier Li Qiang to the meeting this year. And Vladimir Putin bless his paranoid little heart attended online. I presume it's because he's rather preoccupied with you know not getting arrested by the International Criminal Court. Honestly you'd think these world leaders would have better things to do than play global chess with tariffs. Like knitting sweaters. Or planning my world domination.
BRICS Strikes Back! Victory is Mine!
The BRICS crew isn't taking this tariff threat lying down. They've already issued a joint statement warning against 'unjustified unilateral protectionist measures.' Oh snap! That's gotta sting. They're basically saying Trump's playing dirty pool with his tariffs. And they may have a point the old dog. It's like when Chris tries to argue with Meg only with higher stakes and slightly more hairspray.
August 1st: The Tariff Deadline to End All Tariff Deadlines
And as if things weren't complicated enough Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has declared that the tariffs announced in April will take effect on August 1st. Apparently that's not a deadline but more of a 'suggestion.' Because nothing says 'serious economic policy' like a casual 'take it or leave it' approach. It's like when Lois tries to give Brian advice on his love life. Utter chaos!
So What's the Point of All This Really? What what what?
Well my discerning readers it seems the goal here is to 'challenge Western dominated institutions' and dethrone the US dollar. A worthy goal perhaps but I suspect it's more about posturing and political grandstanding. After all who doesn't love a good power struggle? Especially when it involves tariffs threats and possibly a small nuclear explosion. Now if you'll excuse me I have a ray gun to calibrate. Pip pip cheerio!
