Because Trump's administration in its infinite wisdom decided to impose their own tariffs earlier this week. It's like a never ending cycle of 'No you!' 'No YOU!' Sheesh.
China's Got Beef (And Tariffs)
China is not happy folks. They're calling the US tariffs "inconsistent with international trade rules" and saying it "seriously undermines Chinese interests." They even went as far as to say it endangers "global economic development and the stability of the production and supply chain." Dramatic much? But hey when your economy's already struggling with a property crisis and weak consumer sentiment I guess you gotta pull out all the stops. It is what it is dood!
The Unreliable Entity List: You're On It!
But wait there's more! China also added 11 US firms to their "unreliable entities list." This is like the economic equivalent of getting put on timeout. Apparently these companies have been naughty and violated market rules or contractual commitments. On top of that 16 US entities got added to the export control list and China's putting the brakes on certain rare earth related items. So yeah things are getting spicy.
WTO? More Like WTF Am I Right?
Of course China didn't just stop at tariffs and lists. They also filed a formal complaint against the US with the World Trade Organization (WTO). They're claiming that Washington's tariffs "seriously violates WTO rules" and "seriously damages the legitimate rights and interests of WTO members." It's like everyone's pulling out the rulebook and yelling at each other. What a mess man.
Trump's Two Cents (As Always)
And you know Trump couldn't stay silent. He took to Truth Social to declare that "CHINA PLAYED IT WRONG THEY PANICKED THE ONE THING THEY CANNOT AFFORD TO DO !" Classic Trump. Always gotta have the last word even if it's just a bunch of yelling in all caps. Honestly though you gotta wonder if this whole thing is just a giant game of chicken. Who's gonna blink first huh?
