A Witcher's Musings on Metal and Magic
Hmm Nvidia you say? Seems the world’s gone mad for these… chips. Not the kind you find at a tavern after a long day's monster slaying mind you. This Jensen Huang fellow claims that 'sides this newfangled 'artificial intelligence,' these 'robotics' are the real prize. Says self driving carts are just the beginning. Well I’ve seen golems with more charm. But 'Every path is the right path. It's life that's the trick,' as Vesemir used to say.
From Horse to Horsepower: Roach is Worried
A year back Nvidia started lumping 'automotive' and 'robotics' together like mixing potions without knowing what you're doing. Turns out this little venture brought in $567 million last quarter which is a mere 1% of their total loot. But the number is growing like a Leshen in a dark forest. Apparently these silicon brains need 'data center graphics processing units' – GPUs they call 'em – to learn. Gods it sounds like a sorcerer's nightmare. Roach hasn't said much but I saw her eyeing a scrap metal heap the other day...
From Rags to Riches (or Chips)
Speaking of loot Nvidia’s been swimming in it. Sales jumped from $27 billion to a staggering $130.5 billion. And they expect nearly $200 billion this year. That’s more coin than all the kings of the North combined. Shares are soaring making Nvidia worth more than even Microsoft. Perhaps I should invest. Or maybe just stick to what I know: killing monsters for coin. And complaining. Always complaining.
Robots Robots Everywhere... But Are They Dangerous?
Huang reckons these robots will need Nvidia’s fancy chips to train and operate. He even mentioned a 'Thrive platform' for self driving cars and 'Cosmos' AI models for humanoid robots. 'We're working towards a day where there will be billions of robots hundreds of millions of autonomous vehicles and hundreds of thousands of robotic factories,' he says. Sounds like a Dystopian future. Hope they're not planning on replacing witchers with automatons. I'm not sure I like this 'progress'.
More Than Just Shiny Metal Bits
Apparently Nvidia isn't just a chip peddler anymore. They're now an 'AI infrastructure' or 'computing platform' provider. All sounds like expensive ways to say 'We sell you the future one circuit board at a time.' As Huang put it 'We stopped thinking of ourselves as a chip company long ago.' So now I need a degree in engineering instead of monster lore to get by?
No Witcher's Were Harmed (Probably)
At the meeting shareholders did their shareholder things – approved plans and whatnot. Proposals for diversity reports and meeting procedure changes failed. Business as usual it seems. What I'd like to know is when will they discuss the ethical implications of sentient machines? I shudder to think of the day when I’ll have to fight a rogue self driving carriage instead of a Griffin. Oh well 'Wind's howling,' as always.
