A Right Proper Exit?
Right listen up. Word on the street – or rather in the bloody financial papers – is that Novo Nordisk has given their CEO Lars Fruergaard Jørgensen the old heave ho. Claims are they're losing their grip on the market. Losing? I’ve lost wallets with more grip than that. Analysts are saying it's a 'gigantic surprise.' Surprise? Getting shot in the back is a surprise. This is just business innit? Though I'll admit even I raise an eyebrow at the timing.
The Rise and Fall
Jørgensen's been at the helm for eight years. Took them from diabetes merchants to pushing weight loss pills alongside those Yanks at Eli Lilly. The share price went bloody mental making them the biggest swinging dick in Europe for a while. But then the Yanks started undercutting them and suddenly their magic weight loss potions weren't looking so magical. Stock took a beating. What is it with Americans undercutting a good business? Do they not like to make money?
Bad Timing or Something More?
Now here’s where it gets interesting. This Emily Field bird from Barclays is saying the timing is suspicious. The Yanks are meant to stop selling their knock off pills any day now. So why sack the bloke now? As she said 'This company has a reputation for if anything being too deliberate too slow too conservative'. They are not men of violence I see.
Responsibility or Sacrifice?
Deutsche Bank is all torn up about it. Saying it's good that Novo Nordisk is taking the blame for poor performance but questioning if this should have been done at their first quarter earnings announcement? 'Nonetheless the decision appears a little haphazard in both timing and content' they added. I'll take the benefit of doubt.
A Yank at the Helm?
Word is they might be looking for an American CEO. Something about navigating the American market. Makes sense I suppose. But what do I know? I just run a small family business. By order of the Peaky Blinders!
The Bigger Picture
Sydbank is sniffing around wondering if there's more to it than meets the eye. 'This raises the natural question of whether the current challenges are greater than what Novo Nordisk has expressed so far?' Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: in this game you either adapt or you die. And I always intend to survive. After all 'I have learned that to survive you tell people what they need to hear.'
