Alright folks Saul Goodman here your favorite attorney/deal maker/escape artist. Let's talk about this U.S. U.K. trade deal. First off is it legal? Eh that's a question for a higher power... or maybe just my associate who specializes in that sort of thing. Turns out Uncle Sam strong armed the Brits into a deal that looks sweeter than a Los Pollos Hermanos family meal. Investors are doing the happy dance sending those U.S. stock indexes sky high. But across the pond? Let's just say they're not exactly throwing a tea party.
Better Call Saul... for Trade Advice!
So what's the catch? Well the U.K. managed to wiggle out of some stuff like a break on tariffs for the first 100,000 cars they ship over. But here's the kicker: that 10% tariff on everything else? It's staying put. And let's be honest the U.S. was already raking it in exporting more to the U.K. than they imported. It's like me getting paid upfront always a good strategy!
This Deal Stinks!
Now some fancy pants CEO from Atlantic Container Line is whining about how this deal is just 'noise' for most U.K. imports. 'Doesn't affect the majority of products,' he says. What does he know? I bet he's got a fancy yacht and a vacation home in the Bahamas. Of course he doesn't see the pinch! From where I'm standing this deal seems about as fair as a coin toss rigged by yours truly.
China's Doing Fine Thank You Very Much
Speaking of shady deals check out China! They're laughing all the way to the bank despite those U.S. tariffs. Exports are up! Why? Because they're selling like hotcakes to Southeast Asia. It's like having a plan B or C or D... I always tell my clients 'have an out!'
Bitcoin Woes and a New Pope!
Oh and if you thought you could get rich quick on bitcoin think again. Coinbase is having a bad quarter even though the price of bitcoin is hitting record highs. It's like having money but no way to spend it useless! On a completely unrelated note we got a new American Pope! Now there is something to cheer about. Congratulations Pope Leo XIV!
The Bottom Line: Proceed With Caution!
So what's the takeaway here? Well Josh Brown over at Ritzholtz Wealth Management says don't get too excited about this trade deal sparking a market boom. The big boys the retailers are already sweating about tariffs and adjusting their prices. It's all a big gamble folks. Just remember what I always say: 'If you're committed enough you can make any story work.' But sometimes even the best story doesn't pay the bills. Better Call Saul… he knows people! And remember 'never trust a guy with clean fingernails' because in this case the U.S. is cleaning up!
