The Longship Sails Through Storms: Geopolitical and Economic Seas!
Hark listen closely! I Ragnar Lothbrok once sailed the stormy seas battling winds and waves fiercer than any accounting report. Now these 'CEOs,' they steer not longships but 'companies,' through tempests of 'geopolitical shocks' and 'economic volatility.' Sounds like a good raid to me... a raid on inefficiency! These are treacherous times where the old maps are useless and the gods of profit are fickle. But remember my words 'Life is a battle but not just a battle: it's a journey.' These CEOs must be ready to navigate uncharted waters or be swallowed by the sea serpents of failure.
Learning to Lose: A Viking's Guide to Picking Yourself Up After a Drubbing!
These 'CEOs' speak of 'learning from failure.' Ha! We Vikings know failure well. A raid gone wrong a shield broken a mead hall brawl ending with a cracked skull – it's all part of the journey to Valhalla! This McLaren chieftain Zak Brown says he hates to lose. Good! So do I! But as I told my sons 'Don't be afraid to fail. Be afraid not to try.' These leaders must instill urgency and the drive to improve every day like a warrior honing his axe. 'You've got to learn from mistakes but then move on,' he says as I once did after a particularly disastrous attempt to conquer Paris. Remember a true Viking always gets back in the longship even after a shipwreck.
Turbulence and Treachery: When Chieftains Fall From Grace!
Two thousand two hundred and twenty one CEOs stepped down in 2024? Blimey! That's more fallen chieftains than I've seen in a lifetime of raiding! This 'Nissan' CEO Ivan Espinosa speaks of 'optimism.' Bah! Optimism is for shieldmaidens and poets. A true leader needs cunning and a strong arm. But his words are not without value. 'Keep the optimism up because the environment is very tough and you don't want to get overwhelmed,' he says because paralysis is not what you need in the current environment. You need to keep moving. Flexibility is non negotiable. Indeed a stiff neck is a quick death in battle. These leaders must be as adaptable as a serpent slithering through the undergrowth.
Politics and Pressure: The Gods of Government Intervene!
Ah politics! A game more treacherous than any game of Hnefatafl. This 'UniCredit' CEO Andrea Orcel laments the 'growing influence of political and regulatory provisions.' As if the gods weren't meddlesome enough! He speaks of 'government or political intervention.' Ha! Even I Ragnar Lothbrok had to deal with kings and their petty squabbles. He is right. Nowadays everything else can be perfect but if that [government] view has a different view it doesn't go forward. One must be careful not to anger the powers that be lest they send their longships after you. But fear not! For even the gods can be outsmarted.
AI The New Berserker: Can These Chieftains Tame the Beast?
Artificial Intelligence... A fearsome beast indeed. The future is here and it demands these 'CEOs' embrace this new technology or be trampled beneath its metal feet. Ravin Jesuthasan speaks of CEOs being held 'accountable for how quickly she gets AI implemented in the organization.' Boards are actively looking at that. These modern chieftains must wield AI like a weapon or it will become their doom. They must be ready to pivot and adapt for as McLaren's Brown says 'What was good enough yesterday won't be good enough tomorrow.' I say sharpen your axes and prepare to meet this challenge head on. If the gods are with us we shall prevail!
New Blood New Battles: The Future of Chieftainship!
Boeing Nike Starbucks... New names rise new battles begin. These new chieftains must be 'clear eyed about risks fluent in emerging technologies and unafraid to act.' They must be as bold as I was when I first set sail for England as cunning as Floki when he plots revenge and as strong as Bjorn Ironside in the heat of battle. The world changes the battles evolve but the spirit of the Viking—the spirit of the leader—must remain strong. For as I have always said 'I believe my fate is to change the world.'
