The Hunt Begins: US Traps Laid
What in the goddamn hell is going on here? These primitive humans the Yanks are playing games with shiny rocks – semiconductors they call them. They've put a chokehold on China's ability to buy these 'AI chips' whatever primitive magic that entails. Seems the US fears someone else having the bigger stick huh? But China ain't going down without a fight. They're looking at their own 'Huawei' to cook up some alternatives. But can they? This should be fun to watch. *chuckles menacingly*
Tech Jungle Warfare: The Chip Chase
These Yanks are crafty bastards. They're not just stopping China from getting the best chips; they're also blocking the tools needed to make 'em. Design manufacturing – the whole damn ecosystem is under siege. The Chinese are throwing piles of money at the problem but money can't buy you everything can it? "U.S. export controls on advanced Nvidia AI chips have incentivized China's industry to develop alternatives while also making it more difficult for domestic firms to do so," says some Earth expert. Sounds like a classic predator prey situation to me. The thrill is in the hunt after all.
Nvidia's Grip: The Golden Standard... for Now
Apparently 'Nvidia' is the big dog in this chip game. They design the fancy graphics processing units or GPUs that everyone craves. Even the Chinese are snatching up whatever Nvidia tech they can get their grubby hands on. But Uncle Sam is tightening the leash. Nvidia even tried to sneak in a less powerful chip the H20 but got caught! "No time to bleed," as they say. Now China's got a bunch of upstarts trying to fill the void but Huawei's 'HiSilicon' seems to be the closest to a real contender. Time to keep my eye on this Huawei…
Huawei's Ascent: A Glimmer of Hope?
Huawei's got this 'Ascend 910B' GPU and they're supposedly working on a newer model. Some Earth analyst Dylan Patel says they're still behind Nvidia but making progress. "Compared to Nvidia's export restricted chips the performance gap between Huawei and the H20 is less than a full generation. Huawei is not far behind the products Nvidia is permitted to sell into China," he says. Still design is just one piece of the puzzle. You need someone to actually BUILD these things!
The Manufacturing Maze: Nanometers and Nightmares
Nvidia relies on 'TSMC' to build their chips. But TSMC won't touch anything from companies on the US blacklist which includes Huawei. So Huawei's gotta rely on local foundries like 'SMIC'. SMIC is behind the curve though. They're making 7 nanometer chips while TSMC is boasting about 3 nanometer. Smaller nanometers more power more carnage! And then there's the equipment problem. You can't build a predator without a proper toolkit. Seems the Chinese are missing some crucial pieces…
The Memory Game: HBM and Hurdles
GPUs need memory chips specifically 'HBM' to work their magic. South Korea is playing ball with the US and restricting HBM sales to China. So the Chinese are trying to make their own but they're years behind and still facing the equipment problem. And it would seem they are using any and all means to get the technology needed. A tangled web this is. These primitives never cease to amaze me with their complicated ways to kill each other...or make things that do.
