Donald Duck investigates the rise of phony reviews on Tripadvisor and how they're trying to quack down on it!
Donald Duck investigates the rise of phony reviews on Tripadvisor and how they're trying to quack down on it!

What in the World is Going On?

Well blow me down! I just read in the paper (yes I read! Sometimes...) that Tripadvisor that place where folks write about their travels has a real problem with fake reviews. Can you believe it? Eight percent of those reviews last year were phonies! That's more than twice as many as they found back in 2022! As they say 'what's all the hub bub bub?'

Incentivized Reviews? What's the Big Idea?!

Now get this the bigwigs at Tripadvisor (smart fellows!) say that some businesses are giving folks freebies or discounts to write nice things about them. They call 'em 'incentivized reviews.' Some businesses get their employees' mom best friend or cousin to submit reviews mentioning their names and that leads to businesses having reviews that aren't actually valuable to the community. That's about as crooked as Peg Leg Pete! A bunch of double dealers I tell ya! "This makes me mad!"

Figuring Out the Fakes!

A fake review according to Tripadvisor is when someone tries to mess with a place's reputation by writing stuff that's biased or not based on real experience. But the thing is their system is getting better at sniffing out those fakes. They've got a whole system with auto detection human review and even help from the community! "Oh boy oh boy oh boy!"

The Four Types of Trouble!

They've got four categories of fake reviews: Boosting Vandalism Member Fraud and Paid Reviews. And get this: Paid Reviews are the worst they say. That's when review farms post fake reviews for money. Apparently a lot of these come from Asia which is a surprise I tells ya!

A Cat and Mouse Game! Quack!

This whole thing is a never ending game of cat and mouse they say. But Tripadvisor is getting better at catching the fakes. They use fancy technology and even pretend to be fake review brokers to catch the bad guys! Those scoundrels are penalized if caught or get a red badge on their listing which says 'This property is trying to deceive you' "What a revoltin' development!"

AI Reviews: Are They Fake or Not?

And what about reviews written by robots? Well the big shots at Tripadvisor say they're not necessarily fake but they don't allow them. Apparently folks are using AI to make their writing sound fancier. But Tripadvisor wants real honest reviews. "Aw phooey!" I guess even robots aren't allowed to have all the fun. Gotta keep it real folks! Quack!

Tripadvisor needs to get their act together. This is ruining their credibility.
