Of Course There's Gonna Be Tariffs...
Eh what's up doc? Seems like there's a bit of a kerfuffle down in South Korea. Word on the street – or rather from the Korea Customs Service – is that folks are tryin' to pull a fast one see? Disguisin' foreign goods as genuine Korean exports to dodge those yucky tariffs. And guess where most of these shenanigans are comin' from? China! You know what I say to that? 'Of course you realize this means war!' Especially when it involves Uncle Sam's tariffs!
Ka boom! Tariff Violations Explode!
Now get this: the Korea Customs Service sniffed out a whopping 29.5 billion won's worth of violations in just the first quarter! That’s like… a whole lotta carrots! And a dizzying 97% of that was headed straight for the U.S.A. Last year the whole shebang was only 34.8 billion won with only 62% aimed at the good ol' U.S. of A. Someone's been busy eh? As Yosemite Sam would say 'I'm the meanest toughest rootin tootin' varmint that's ever crossed the Rio Grande!' But even he'd be impressed by these numbers!
Trump's Trade Tiffs!
Remember when Trump slapped tariffs on everyone and their uncle? Well these disguised export attempts apparently went up during his first term. So these clever clogs are anticipating the tariffs and making plans to bypass them. Seems like 'This looks like a job for…' someone to keep an eye on this!
A Meeting of the Minds!
So the South Korean customs fellas had a pow wow with U.S. officials to discuss joint investigations. 'Hmph the rascals!' Someone is trying to use South Korea as a sneaky detour to avoid tariffs and regulations. It's like tryin' to pull a rabbit out of a hat... only the rabbit is a bunch of illegally exported goods and the hat is the international trade system!
Battery Blues and Camera Capers!
The customs guys found 3.3 billion won worth of cathode materials for batteries imported from China and shipped to the U.S. with South Korea marked as the country of origin. Before Trump's tariffs even took effect! And in March they nabbed 19.3 billion won worth of surveillance cameras imported in parts from China reassembled in South Korea and then shipped off to bypass those U.S. restrictions on Chinese communication devices! 'What a maroon!' Some of the goods got through while others are stuck at the port. As I always say 'I shoulda taken that left toin at Albukoikee!'
Task Force Time!
To protect honest domestic businesses they've launched a special task force and they're planning to beef up their response to prevent such shenanigans. Also all the violations will be handed over to the prosecutors! That’s all folks… for now! But trust me I'll be keepin' an eye on this. After all a rabbit's gotta look out for his carrots right?

This is why international trade is so complicated!

Maybe we need a better carrot-detection system.
