Of Course You Realize This Means Film!

Well now ain't this a fine kettle of fish! Seems like that Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi – that's P A N A H I for you city slickers – just went and nabbed the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival! For a little revenge thriller called "It Was Just an Accident,?" no less! And get this folks this Panahi fella's been banned from leaving Iran for over 15 years! Talk about being stuck in a rut! I myself have had trouble getting out of Elmer Fudd's traps but this is something else!

The Ol' Hunger Strike Gambit

So Cate Blanchett – a real looker I must say – presented the award to Panahi. Turns out he was even thrown in the clink three years ago and went on a hunger strike! A hunger strike! That's dedication folks. I once went on a carrot strike... lasted about five minutes. Couldn't resist the crunch! But this guy he's been making films in secret like a sneaky rabbit pilfering carrots from Farmer Fudd's garden. He even made a flick in his living room and another in a taxi! Talk about low budget doc!

Standing Ovation? I Prefer a Carrot Cake!

The crowd went wild giving Panahi a standing ovation that'd make Yosemite Sam blush. He threw his arms up like he'd just seen the Abominable Snowman and gave a hearty cheer. Seems Juliette Binoche – she of the award presenting type fame – has been a supporter for ages. Back in 2010 when Panahi was under house arrest she held up his name at Cannes! Talk about sticking your neck out for a pal! I once stuck my neck out for a carrot... nearly lost it to a lawnmower.

Freedom! That's What I'm Asking For Doc!

On stage Panahi gave a speech about freedom in his country. "Let us join forces!" he declared. "No one should dare tell us what kind of clothes we should wear what we should do or what we should not do. The cinema is a society. Nobody is entitled to tell what we should or refrain from doing." Now that's what I call standing up for yourself! Just like the time I told Yosemite Sam he couldn't tell me how to eat my carrot. BANG! Right in the kisser!

Neon Lights Up Cannes (Again!)

Turns out this win is part of a crazy streak for the indie distributor Neon. They've backed the last SIX Palme d'Or winners! That's like winning the carrot lottery six times in a row! And get this – a bunch of those movies went on to be Oscar contenders with "Parasite" and "Anora" snagging Best Picture. Looks like Neon's got the Midas touch... or maybe they just know a good carrot when they see one!

That's All Folks... For Now!

So Panahi's heading back to Tehran 'cause life in exile ain't for him. "It Was Just an Accident" is based on his prison experiences where some ex prisoners are trying to decide whether or not to bump off the guy who terrorized them in jail. Sounds like a real humdinger of a movie! And as Juliette Binoche said "Art will always win. What is human will always win." And I say "Carrots will always be delicious!" Eh what's up Cannes?
