Groovy Baby Groovy...? Not So Much!

Alright Austin Powers here reporting live from my shagadelic lair! Word on the street – or rather the superhighway – is that Tesla's pulling a disappearing act with their Model S and Model X in China. Yeah baby! They've stopped taking orders faster than I can say 'Yeah baby!' This whole thing smells fishier than a kipper in a sauna.

Trade War? More Like a 'Trade Woe'!

So what's the dillio Basil? Turns out it's that pesky trade war between the U.S. and China. These two are slugging it out like me and Dr. Evil only instead of lasers it's tariffs! China jacked up their tariffs on U.S. imports making those groovy Model S and Model X cars pricier than a night out with Goldmember. Not a good look baby!

Austin's Automotive Analysis: Shaguar vs. Tesla

Now I'm no petrolhead but even I can see this ain't ideal. Tesla's cars are made in the U.S. and shipped over so these tariffs are hitting them harder than Oddjob's steel rimmed bowler hat! Suddenly those slick rides become a bit less tempting for the Chinese consumer. It's like offering someone a martini then slapping them with a ten dollar surcharge. Not very Austin Powers esque is it?

Shanghai Surprise! Or Not...

Fear not though! Tesla's still got their Shanghai plant cranking out Model 3 and Model Y cars. These are mainly for the local market and export to Europe keeping the Tesla dream alive albeit with slightly different models. So while the Model S and X take a breather the other models are still struttin' their stuff.

Less Than 0.5 Percent? Oh Behave!

Okay so here's the kicker: apparently the Model S and Model X sales in China were only a tiny fraction of Tesla's total deliveries last year – less than 0.5%! That’s smaller than Mini Me! So while it's a bit of a bummer it's not exactly the end of the world. But still every little bit hurts right? Especially when you're trying to beat Dr. Evil.

BYD ing for Attention: The Competition Heats Up!

And let's not forget those local players like BYD. They're muscling in on Tesla's turf offering some stiff competition. Plus word has it that Tesla's posh models are selling a bit slower these days partly 'cause they haven't had a makeover and partly because of some folks not digging Elon's antics. Talk about a mojo killer!
