By Order of the Algorithm

Right so Bezos' paper The Washington Post has gone and made a deal with this OpenAI mob. Means their words their stories are now fodder for that blinking box ChatGPT. Summaries quotes links – all served up by a machine. Seems like everyone's making deals these days. But remember 'everyone's a whore Grace. We just sell different parts of ourselves.' Question is what part of themselves are the Post selling? Their truth? Their soul? I've built empires on less mind you. But at least I knew who I was dealing with. Can you trust a machine? Can you trust Bezos for that matter? That's the question innit?

AI: The New Bookie?

They're calling it a partnership this deal between the Post and OpenAI. But I've seen enough partnerships in my time to know they usually end up with someone getting knifed in a dark alley. The Post gets their name out there OpenAI gets content to feed its monster. Sounds like a crooked game doesn't it? Like fixed odds at the races. And we all know what happens to those who try to fix the odds... 'whiskey's good proofing water. Tells you who's real who isn't.' This AI business I'm not sure I like it. Too many unknowns too many variables. It's like betting on a horse you've never seen run.

The Bezos Gamble

Bezos is already deep in the AI game. 'Ask The Post AI,' 'Climate Answers' – sounds like something from a bloody sci fi novel not a newspaper. He's betting the farm on this technology thinking it'll save his empire. But what if it destroys it? What if these machines learn too much? Start thinking for themselves? Then we're all buggered. He better be careful this Bezos. Sometimes the smartest gamble is to not gamble at all. But then again easy money has its appeal but as you know easy money is a fool's errand.

Everyone's at It

The article says OpenAI has partnered with over 20 news publishers. Hearst Condé Nast Time... they're all lining up to feed the machine. Desperate the lot of them. Chasing relevance in a world that's changing faster than a Shelby Company ledger. But there is always someone following behind. Always. So is it desperation or a master plan? What will they do when everything they built crumbles? I can almost hear Polly saying 'You can change what you do but you can't change what you want'. And what everyone wants is relevance!

The Resistance: NYT Fights Back

Not everyone's bending the knee to the AI overlords. *The New York Times* *Chicago Tribune* and others are suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement. They're saying these machines are stealing their work their intellectual property. Good for them. Someone has to stand up to these bullies. Even if it's a losing battle it's important to show them that we will not go down without a fight. It's all about the game. The way I see it the newspapers are only trying to protect their business. Business is war. It's about strategy and for them the strategy is to sue. Not a bad idea.

The Future is Unwritten

So what does it all mean? Is this the end of journalism as we know it? Will machines replace reporters? Will truth become a commodity manufactured by algorithms? I don't know. But I do know one thing: 'Intelligence is a very valuable thing innit my friend? And usually it comes far too fucking late'. This AI business... it's a gamble. A dangerous one. But maybe just maybe it's a gamble worth taking. We'll see.
