The Razor's Edge of Biotech
The game's changed hasn't it? For years we've been pouring money into these biotech firms watching them stumble through a mire of red tape and failed experiments. They’ve been hit harder than a man caught stealing from the Shelby Company. Tariffs staffing cuts…it's enough to make a man reach for the whiskey. The SPDR S&P Biotech ETF is down and folks are losing their shirts. But mark my words there's always a way out. Always.
AI: The New Horse in the Race
This Jefferies bloke Michael Yee he's got a point. Generative AI...sounds like something out of a bloody science fiction novel. But it's real and it's here to cut through the Gordian knot of drug discovery. He says it'll save companies years and billions. Years Arthur! Billions! That's enough to buy half of Birmingham...twice. '90% of drugs fail' he says. With AI we're talking about halving those odds. That's a gamble I'm willing to take. After all we're Peaky Blinders not bloody bookmakers.
Cutting Years Cutting Costs
Ten years to get a drug to market? A billion dollars down the drain? It's a mug's game. But with AI we're talking about shaving off years turning a decade long slog into seven or eight. Imagine the possibilities. Think of the time we can save the money we can reinvest. We're not just talking about making drugs; we're talking about creating an empire. An empire built on code and algorithms. And if you look closely you'll see a new opportunity.
Regulatory Blades and Optimism
There's always a catch isn't there? Regulatory hurdles the government sticking its nose where it doesn't belong. But Yee reckons the bad news is already priced in. He's optimistic. And when a man like that is optimistic I tend to listen. We’ve faced worse odds than this haven't we? We’ve stared down the barrel of a gun and walked away richer. A little bit of regulation isn’t going to scare us.
The Players: Amgen Schrodinger and More
Amgen Schrodinger Illumina Danaher...these are the names to remember. Amgen's already playing the AI game analyzing data like a bloody chess grandmaster. Schrodinger's raking it in from R&D spending using machine learning to find new cures. Illumina and Danaher...they're down but not out. There's always a chance for a comeback. And in this game comebacks are what we do best.
The Long Game
Five years from now Yee says we'll see the fruits of this AI revolution. Drugs that started in a test tube designed by algorithms saving lives and making fortunes. It's a long game this. But we're Peaky Blinders. We play the long game better than anyone. We adapt we innovate and we always always survive. 'Whiskey' he says 'is good proofing water. Tells you what's real. What's good. What matters.' The rest is just noise.
