What's All This Fuss About?
Right then! So I saw this thing on the telly all about 'GitHub' and 'Copilot' and some such nonsense. Apparently Microsoft – you know the people who make those computers that sometimes work – have made a new friend for all those clever people who type away at glowing screens all day. They call it a 'coding agent.' Sounds like something out of a spy film doesn't it? Except instead of catching villains it catches… bugs in computer programs. Like catching flies with my trusty newspaper! Very clever indeed but can it make a good cuppa? That’s what I want to know.
A Helping Hand or a Troublesome Tool?
This 'Copilot' thingy helps those clever coders do their typing faster. They say it fixes problems and adds new bits to their computer programs. It even writes the instructions! Imagine! Like having someone write instructions for my sandwiches – 'First remove from bag. Second attempt to eat before the pigeons do!' I'm not sure I'd trust it though. Last time I let someone else make my sandwiches I ended up with sprouts! Sprouts I tell you! Disgusting!
Putting the 'AI' in 'A Bit of a Mess'?
Apparently this Copilot is powered by something called 'Claude 3.7 Sonnet AI.' Sounds like a fancy car doesn't it? They say it's like having another programmer on the team. But what if it starts arguing about the best way to paint the house? Or worse what if it tries to take Teddy's place? 'Oh Teddy you're so last century. Let me cuddle you with my robotic arms!' No thank you! Teddy is irreplaceable. He's been with me through thick and thin like when I tried to paint the room using fireworks and a bucket of paint. 'I have been warned,' indeed.
Vibe Coding? Sounds a Bit Hippyish!
They're talking about 'vibe coding' now... sounds a bit hippyish if you ask me. I'm not sure I want my computer programs written by someone who's just 'feeling' the code. I prefer a good solid bash with a hammer myself. Does the trick every time! But apparently these new systems like 'Cursor' and 'Windsurf,' can write programs just by saying a few words. Imagine just mumbling at the computer and it does all the work! I'd be able to finally program the TV remote to work properly! Although even if it did I'd probably still end up watching that boring documentary about concrete.
Free Tea? I Mean Free Access?
Now here's the kicker. Some people get to use a little bit of this Copilot thing for free but the good stuff costs money. So you're telling me that to get a computer to help you write computer programs you have to pay extra? Seems a bit silly doesn't it? Like paying extra for the crusts on your sandwiches! Mind you if it could make my sandwiches automatically maybe it would be worth it. Ham and pickle please! And no sprouts!
The Future is Now… Or is it?
So this 'GitHub Copilot coding agent' is supposed to be the future is it? Faster coding fewer mistakes and more time for... well I don't know what. Probably more coding! I'm still not convinced it's better than a good cup of tea and a biscuit though. And definitely not better than Teddy. But if it can stop the pigeons from stealing my sandwiches then maybe just maybe I'll give it a try. Now where did I put that newspaper?
