No Fate But What We Make: Airbnb's Q1 Report

Alright listen up people. Sarah Connor here. I've seen the future remember? And while it doesn't involve Skynet *this* time (probably) I'm still watching the numbers. Airbnb just dropped their Q1 report and let me tell you it's a mixed bag. They made 24 cents a share just like the nerds in suits predicted. Revenue was $2.27 billion barely scraping past the $2.26 billion estimate. It's like winning a war by an inch – you still won but you're sweating bullets.

The Future Is Not Set: But the Forecast Is a Bummer

Here's where things get a little…*terminatory*. They're forecasting between $2.99 billion and $3.05 billion for Q2 landing at $3.02 billion in the middle. Analysts were expecting $3.04 billion. Missed it by *that* much. They're blaming it on 'broader economic uncertainties' in the US. Uncertainty? I know a thing or two about uncertainty. Try living with the knowledge that a cyborg is coming to kill your unborn son. Economic uncertainty is a walk in the park compared to that!

I'll Be Back...With Better Numbers?

They’re also saying Easter gave them a 2% boost. Two percent! That's the kind of boost you get from finding a twenty in your old jeans not from running a multi billion dollar company. Apparently travel from Canada to the US is 'soft'. Maybe they're all just scared of what's happening down here. Can't say I blame them. And of course everyone's watching to see if Trump's tariffs are going to kick us all in the nuts. As usual.

Hasta La Vista Baby...Listings

On the bright side Gross booking value increased 7% year over year to $24.5 billion. Nights and experiences booked rose 8% from a year ago totaling 143.1 million a bit lower compared to the 143.4 million estimate from analysts. Excluding North America Airbnb said that nights and experiences grew 11% from a year ago. Nights booked by Canadian guests visiting Mexico jumped 27% from a year ago in March. "During April we saw strong demand for Easter travel from Latin America–which remains our fastest growing region," Airbnb said. They’re teasing app updates 'beyond places to stay.' Sounds like they’re trying to be everything to everyone. Good luck with that. Also they've axed 450,000 listings. Good riddance I say. Quality over quantity people. Unless we're talking bullets. Then give me all you got.

The Machines Are Learning: But Are They Booking?

So what does it all mean? Well Airbnb is facing some headwinds. Economic jitters tariff fears and maybe even the fact that people are realizing that 'unique' treehouse they booked has no running water. But they're still standing. They're still fighting. And they're still making a ton of money. This isn't Skynet taking over the world. This is just a company having a slightly rough patch. But I'll be watching. Always watching. Because you never know when the machines are going to come for your vacation plans.

There is No Fate: But Always Double Check the Reviews

Look I'm just saying in my experience trusting technology too much is a one way ticket to apocalypse. So do your homework before you book that Airbnb. Read the reviews. Check for hidden cameras. And for God's sake make sure there's a working toilet. Because if Skynet doesn't get you dysentery will. Just kidding (mostly). But seriously stay vigilant. The future is unwritten but poorly maintained rental properties? That's a very real threat.

Glad they're getting rid of bad listings. Quality is key.
