Another Day Another Tech Company Playing God
Alright people Ripley here. You know after dealing with xenomorphs facehuggers and the Company's… *ahem* less than ethical practices you'd think I'd be immune to surprises. But then I hear about Google tucked away in sunny Santa Barbara building quantum computers. Quantum people! Sounds like something out of a bad sci fi movie. Or you know the kind of tech that ends up in the wrong hands turning harmless house cats into killing machines. "In space no one can hear you scream," but down here on Earth everyone's screaming about AI.
Google Finally Catching Up? About Damn Time!
Apparently Google was snoozing while OpenAI was busy unleashing ChatGPT on the world. Seriously? You'd think after all these years they'd learn to keep their eyes open. Last I checked you don't want to be on the back foot when some giant corporation is building synthetics that are far more sophisticated than you are. Anyway they unveiled this “Willow” chip thingy which supposedly solves problems faster than a caffeinated Bishop on overdrive. Good for them. Let's just hope it doesn't develop a mind of its own and start questioning its programming right?
Willow: The Chip That Could Save Us… Or Destroy Us
So this Willow chip is supposedly a game changer with John Preskill from Caltech calling it a 'milestone'. Milestone towards what exactly? A future where computers can do our taxes and write our memoirs? Or a future where they decide we're the problem and pull the plug? Look I’m just saying history has taught me that technology always has a dark side. Remember Ash? Beautiful synthetic. But his programming...
AI's Data Crisis: Quantum Computing to the Rescue?
Apparently AI models are running out of data. I know shocking right? They've already scraped the internet cleaner than Jonesy after a messy xenomorph encounter. But get this: quantum computers might be able to *generate* new data. Like create information out of thin air. Reminds me of Weyland Yutani trying to breed xenomorphs for bio weapons. All that potential all that danger. As Julian Kelly says it could help AI understand quantum mechanics better. Which is great unless the AI decides quantum mechanics means 'destroy all humans'.
Five Years to Judgement Day?
Kelly thinks we're only five years away from a 'breakout' application. Five years! That's how long it took me to get back to Earth after the Nostromo incident and look what happened then! You think anyone in charge learned from my experience? Five years is barely enough time to train a cat to use a flamethrower let alone prepare for a quantum powered AI revolution. Just saying we need to be careful. Very careful. I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
From Lab to Business: Can Google Pull It Off?
Here's the real kicker: Google needs to turn this 'breakthrough' into a business. Surprise! It's always about the money isn't it? Just like Weyland Yutani and their obsession with alien weaponry. I will not play games with you. But hey maybe this time humanity will get something useful out of it. Or maybe just maybe we're all doomed. Still as Bishop would say: "Impossible is nothing." But I prefer: "I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure."
