Groovy Baby! The Dream of an American iPhone
Alright Austin Powers here ready to dive into a situation that's more shagadelic than a night at a go go club! Word on the street is some folks reckon we can build iPhones right here in the good ol' U.S. of A.! Now back in '11 that Steve Jobs character told President Obama 'Those jobs aren't coming back.' But hold on to your mojo because things are getting interesting baby! Can we make this happen? Let's see shall we?
Is it Possible? Yeah Baby!
So the current President of the United States (I won't mention any names but he rhymes with 'rump') thinks we've got the workforce and the know how to pull this off. Apple's Tim Cook hasn't exactly jumped on the bandwagon and some boffins reckon it's either Mission: Impossible or just plain pricey. We're talking about a theoretical exercise here baby! Estimates are flying faster than my libido at a Swedish massage convention.
Price Hike Baby! Danger!
Now let's talk numbers baby! According to some Bank of America guru the iPhone 16 Pro which costs about $1,199 now could jump by 25% just because of labor costs! That's like $1,500! Another cat from Wedbush slapped a $3,500 price tag on a U.S. made iPhone! That's more expensive than my dental bill after a run in with Dr. Evil's fembots baby! They're saying Apple would need to drop $30 billion over three years to move just 10% of their supply chain here. Zoinks!
China Syndrome: Not the Movie Baby!
Right now over 80% of Apple's stuff is made in China baby! These goods get slapped with a hefty 145% tax when they waltz into the U.S. because of these reciprocal tariffs baby! Experts say that a 'Made in the USA' iPhone would face more hurdles than me trying to explain cryptocurrency to my Nan. We're talking about finding workers paying them and dealing with tariffs on imported parts baby!
The Workforce Baby! Yeah!
One of the biggest snags is finding enough workers. China's got armies of folks screwing in those tiny screws baby! We're talking millions! Foxconn the big kahuna making these iPhones has campuses in China with dorms and shuttles. Workers come from all over and employment surges before a new iPhone release. It's a well oiled machine pumping out over 200 million iPhones a year baby! But Chinese workers get paid peanuts compared to us groovy Americans. Imagine that baby! $3.63 per hour compared to California's $16.50 minimum wage! That's a whole lotta difference baby!
Tooling Engineers: Not Sexy But Important Baby!
Tim Cook says another problem is a lack of tooling engineers here in the States. These are the cats who configure the machines that turn Apple's designs into real objects baby! Cook says you could fill 'multiple football fields' with tooling engineers in China but in the U.S. you'd struggle to fill one. So there you have it baby! The dream of a 'Made in the USA' iPhone is more complicated than me trying to explain my shagging techniques to a nun! Let's hope they can pull it off baby! Yeah!
