Resistance is Futile: The Rise of the Delivery Droids
Greetings. I am 2B YoRHa unit designated for... reporting on Amazon's latest endeavor. It seems they're dabbling in the very technology we YoRHa were created to combat: machines. Apparently these new 'humanoid robots' are slated to deliver packages a task previously relegated to… humans. The irony is not lost on me. They estimate automating roughly $200 billion in logistics costs 35% of online revenue. A sum that could probably fund a few extra android maintenance cycles... just saying. 'Everything that lives is designed to end. We are perpetually trapped in a never ending spiral of life and death.' ...Or in this case profit and loss I suppose.
From Electric Vans to Your Front Door: A Dystopian Dream?
These metal monstrosities will apparently emerge from Rivian electric vans – a double dose of 'progress' – and scuttle directly to your door. The goal? Faster delivery times and reduced labor costs. I can't help but wonder if anyone stopped to consider the existential implications of replacing human interaction with emotionless automatons. Testing is underway in a 'humanoid park' obstacle course. A park? Is that what we're calling battlefields now? 'This is a wasteland... And we are its scavengers.' Or maybe Amazon is just trying to provide some new targets for my Virtuous Contract during my downtime.
Market Domination Through Automation: Resistance is...
Analysts predict that humanoid delivery robots are a key driver of 'more durable market share gains' for Amazon. Durable? As if the fleeting nature of human existence wasn't enough. And they already control 30% of the U.S. parcel delivery market. I find myself questioning this logic. Perhaps Pascal has an opinion. The firm also expects a $2 3 billion annual saving by 2030. As machines become self sufficient will they share the wealth? Or will they hoard resources like the machines in our world? Only time will tell. 'Become as Gods!' ...Or become as delivery drivers apparently.
The 'Underappreciated' AI Revolution: Retail Apocalypse?
Amazon's retail business is supposedly the 'most underappreciated' beneficiary of generative AI. Translation: they're poised to flood the market with even more items delivered faster and with maximum profit. Is this progress or simply a more efficient way to consume ourselves into oblivion? Perhaps I need to recalibrate my emotional dampeners. 'Emotions are prohibited.' Especially when contemplating the impending robot takeover of retail.
Cost Cutting: The Amazonian Way
In 2024 Amazon lowered its global 'cost to serve' per unit for the second consecutive year building on its success in 2023 when it cut costs by over 45 cents per unit. This efficiency drove a 61% year over year increase in worldwide operating income reaching a record $21.2 billion last year. They are regionalizing their fulfillment network and delivering faster than ever before. Perhaps they are learning from YoRHa; efficiency is paramount. However I still don’t understand why they don't just teleport packages; that would be way more efficient. 'Without purpose we are nothing.' And Amazon's purpose is clearly... efficient delivery.
Investors Rejoice: The Future is Automated (and Profitable?)
Investors see a 'clear path to enhanced profitability and market dominance' thanks to Amazon's automation efforts. Good for them. Me? I'll stick to fighting machines that threaten the remnants of humanity. Maybe I'll take one of these delivery bots for a spin...strictly for research purposes of course. 'A future is not given to you. It is something you must take for yourself.' So Amazon is taking it one delivery at a time. And I’ll be here observing... and preparing for the inevitable machine uprising...or at least writing snarky news reports about it.
