Oh Behave! The Skinny on These Skinny Shots
Alright alright alright! Austin Powers here reporting live from my shagadelic headquarters. Word on the street – or rather on the internet – is that those oh so popular weight loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy might have some shall we say 'eye raising' side effects. It seems the European Medicines Agency's safety committee has confirmed these weekly injections could in rare cases cause a serious eye condition potentially leading to vision loss! Not exactly what you want when you're trying to look your best for a night out eh?
NAION?! Sounds Like a Villain From My Past!
This whole kerfuffle revolves around something called non arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). Sounds like one of Dr. Evil's henchmen doesn't it? But seriously this condition involves decreased blood flow to the optic nerve which as you know connects your eye to your brain. It's like a bad breakup between your peepers and your think tank! Apparently people with diabetes taking semaglutide (the active ingredient in these drugs) are at a higher risk. Not exactly groovy baby.
Novo Nordisk Says 'Not So Fast!'
Now Novo Nordisk the company behind these miracle meds is playing it cool. They're saying the data doesn't necessarily prove a direct link between semaglutide and NAION. They reckon the benefits still outweigh the risks. But being the responsible chaps they are they're working with the EMA to update the product labels. Safety first baby!
Wet AMD? Sounds Like a Night in My Jacuzzi!
But wait there's more! A study published in JAMA Ophthalmology suggests that diabetes patients using GLP 1 drugs (like Ozempic and Wegovy) might be twice as likely to develop neovascular age related macular degeneration (nAMD) or "wet" AMD as the kids are calling it. This is a serious condition that can lead to irreversible vision loss. It’s like losing your Mojo but for your eyes! And the longer you take these meds the higher the risk. Oh behave!
Health Tech to the Rescue!?
But don't fret baby! It ain't all bad news. A bunch of health tech companies are on the scene trying to disrupt the status quo and make healthcare more accessible and efficient. These groovy companies like Transcarent Virta Health Oura and a whole slew of others are innovating like it's nobody's business! They're using AI wearables and all sorts of fancy gadgets to help people manage their health and wellbeing. They're featured on CNBC's Disruptor 50 List which is pretty shagadelic if you ask me.
Yeah Baby! A Bright Future for Health!
So what's the bottom line? While there are some potential risks associated with these weight loss drugs it's crucial to remember that everyone is different. Talk to your doctor do your research and stay informed. And remember there are always alternative ways to stay healthy and groovy! Now if you'll excuse me I've got a date with a Swedish fembot. Yeah baby yeah!
