Ten Million Trips and a Cloud of Questions

Alright web heads Spidey here with some breaking news from the world of tomorrow! Seems like Waymo that Alphabet backed company with the self driving cars has hit a major milestone: 10 million trips! Co CEO Tekedra Mawakana was struttin' her stuff at the Google I/O thingamajig telling everyone how these ain't no joyrides these are *paid* trips! People are actually using these things in their everyday lives. As if my everyday life isn't crazy enough already dodging Green Goblin on a Tuesday!

From Phoenix to Frisco: Waymo's Expanding Web

These trips are happening all over the place: Austin Los Angeles San Francisco and the Phoenix area. Waymo's apparently slingin' out over 250,000 rides a week! And get this they just got the green light to expand into even more of the Bay Area including San Jose. Talk about world domination one traffic light at a time! Makes you wonder if they'll start offering discounts for superheroes or at least have a 'villain escape route' option.

The Money Making Machine… Or Not?

But here's the thing true believers: Waymo is part of Alphabet's "Other Bets" unit and that whole category is bleedin' greenbacks. Revenue is down and losses are up. Mawakana herself admitted that Waymo isn't making any dough yet but they're "super focused on building a sustainable business." She says there's a "path to profitability." Yeah well I've heard that before. It's kinda like when Doc Ock says he's going straight… before building another giant robot squid.

Musk's Mayhem: Tesla Enters the Fray

And speaking of villains enter Elon Musk and Tesla! They're planning to launch their own robotaxi service in Austin next month. Musk says they'll start small with about 10 cars but if all goes well they'll ramp it up to thousands. He's even planning to bring these robo rides to L.A. and San Francisco. Cue the ominous music! He’s even said Tesla's approach is more ambitious than Waymo's. Gee ya think?

Cameras vs. Lasers: The Tech Showdown

Tesla's doing things a little differently. They're mostly using cameras and computer vision instead of fancy sensors like lidar and radar. Mawakana says Waymo is taking the "safest path." She pretty much said that Waymo's way is the only way. They've been doing this all day every day for five years! To Waymo it's safety first! Not safety and cost! Or cost and safety! Reminds me of Uncle Ben's lesson: “With great power comes great responsibility.” Guess Waymo is feeling the responsibility part.

The Road Ahead: Bumpy or Smooth?

So what does all this mean folks? Well it looks like the robotaxi race is officially on! Will Waymo stay ahead? Can Tesla actually pull this off without causing a Skynet situation? And most importantly will these things ever be profitable? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: your friendly neighborhood Spider Man will be watching web shooters ready in case things get a little too… automated. Excelsior!
