Great Power No Responsibility? Court Lets Layoffs Loose
Alright web heads your friendly neighborhood Spider Man here with the lowdown. So the Supreme Court just gave a thumbs up – or should I say a web shooter's blast – to let those good ol' Trump era staff reductions at federal agencies swing into action. Yep you heard that right. Looks like some people are about to feel that classic Parker luck and not the good kind which let's be honest is most of the time. I'm just a friendly neighborhood Spider Man but my Spider Sense is tingling like crazy. Something's not quite right and it smells like bad news for a whole lot of folks just trying to make an honest living. With great power comes great responsibility right? I wonder if anyone at the Supreme Court remembers that one?
Justice Jackson: The One Voice of Reason in a Mad Mad World
Now before you start blaming everyone in robes Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson was the lone voice crying out in the wilderness. She dissented basically saying 'Hold on a minute! We don't know what's going on down there!' She thinks the Court's jumping the gun unleashing what she calls the 'President's wrecking ball.' Ouch. Even I wouldn’t call Doc Ock’s arms a ‘wrecking ball’ to his face. Okay maybe I would but only after making sure I was safely out of tentacle reach! You know she's got a point. Rushing into things rarely ends well. Just ask me about that time I tried to take down the Rhino with a bubble gum launcher. (Don't ask.)
Executive Order 66... Wait Wrong Universe. But Still Sketchy
So this all stems from an executive order back in February ordering agencies to start planning massive layoffs. Because apparently that's the best way to make things better. I mean I get it sometimes you gotta streamline things but firing a bunch of people? That's rough buddy. It's giving me serious 'With great power...' flashbacks except this time it's somebody else's responsibility. This is some next level J. Jonah Jameson type stuff.
The Trump Card: 'It's Been Happening for 150 Years!'
The Trump administration's lawyer D. John Sauer is saying that this is all perfectly legal and totally normal. Apparently firing a bunch of folks is as American as apple pie and complaining about taxes. He claims Congress has always let the President do this kind of thing. I don’t know about that. I mean I've been swinging around this city for a while and I've never seen anything quite this… decisive. 'Nuff said.
Unions and Cities Unite: Fight the Power!
Of course the unions and a bunch of cities and counties aren't taking this lying down. They're fighting back claiming these layoffs are illegal. Good for them! It's always good to see the little guy stand up to the big guy. You know like me taking on Kingpin. Except you know with a lot less money and a lot more webbing. I love these rag tag teams; it reminds me of the time I had to team up with Howard the Duck to stop a galactic invasion of squirrels… But that’s another story for another time!
To Be Continued...? The Legal Saga Swings On!
So that's the story so far. This whole legal battle is far from over. The Supreme Court will probably have to weigh in again later. In the meantime I'll be swinging around keeping an eye on things and maybe trying to find a good therapist for all these stressed out federal employees. Just another day in the life of your friendly neighborhood Spider Man! Now if you'll excuse me I have a date with a burrito. And then maybe some crime fighting...or maybe just a nap. Who knows? Excelsior!
