With Great Power Comes Great Annual Fees!
Alright web heads Spidey here! Seems like the Chase Sapphire Reserve got a major upgrade like when I got the symbiote suit... only hopefully this one doesn't try to turn me evil. They're dangling a shiny new welcome offer: 100,000 points AND a $500 Chase Travel credit if you spend $5,000 in three months. Sounds amazing right? But Aunt May always said 'If it sounds too good to be true...' Yep the annual fee jumped to a whopping $795. Ouch! That's almost enough to buy a lifetime supply of web fluid! But hold onto your hats folks there's more!
Credits Credits Everywhere! But Are They Useful?
So what do you get for all that dough? Well Chase is throwing statement credits at you like confetti at a ticker tape parade! Up to $500 for fancy hotels (The Edit by Chase Travel) $300 for concert tickets (StubHub and viagogo) $300 for dining $300 for DoorDash and even money towards Apple TV+ and Apple Music and Peloton subscriptions. It's like they're trying to buy my love... or at least my attention. And if you spend $75,000 on the card annually you can unlock even MORE goodies like IHG Diamond Elite status and even a $500 Southwest Airlines credit when booked through Chase Travel. Talk about a high roller! Seems like 'With great credit comes great responsibility'... to remember all these credits.
Earning Points: The Ups and Downs (Mostly Ups!)
Now about those sweet sweet points. You'll snag 8X points on flights hotels and rental cars booked through Chase Travel. That's a major boost! And 4X points on flights and rooms booked directly. Pretty sweet right? But here's the sticky part: you only get 1X points on all other travel like transit vacation rentals and cruises. Talk about a letdown web slingers. It used to be 3X on everything! That was the power and responsibility I was talking about!
Points Boost: Redemption Revelation or Redemption Ripoff?
They're also ditching the old 50% redemption boost in favor of something called Points Boost. It sounds like a power up from one of my video games but in reality it lets you redeem points for up to 2X value when booking select airlines and hotels through Chase Travel. Otherwise you're stuck with a measly 1 cent per point. Seriously? I've seen better deals in the Daily Bugle classifieds!
The Competition: Web Slinging Around the Credit Card Jungle
Of course Chase isn't the only player in this game. Amex's Platinum Card is also out there tempting you with Uber credits and lounge access but with its own sky high annual fee. And then there's the Capital One Venture X which is a bit cheaper but still offers travel credits and lounge access. It's a jungle out there folks! You gotta do your homework. 'Sometimes to do what's right we have to be steady and give up the thing we want the most. Even our dreams.' Which in this case could be a new credit card.
So Is It Worth It or Should You Just Stick to Web Shooters?
Alright true believers the big question: Is the revamped Chase Sapphire Reserve worth the price of admission? It depends. If you travel a lot and I mean *a lot* and you can maximize those credits it might be worth it. But if you're more of a friendly neighborhood web slinger who mostly just swings around Queens you might want to stick with a card that doesn't cost more than my rent! Remember 'With great power comes great responsibility'... to manage your credit card wisely! Now if you'll excuse me I gotta go stop a bank robbery... with lower interest rates hopefully!
