Trump Tariffs Got Nissan Sweating?
Alright folks Saul Goodman here your favorite attorney at law and sometimes unofficial economic analyst. Seems like our friends over at Nissan are feeling the heat from those Trump tariffs. Christian Meunier the new big cheese at Nissan Americas is talking about 'maxing out' production. You know what that means? More cars more jobs and hopefully less crying into their sake about those pesky import taxes. As I always say 'Better Call Saul!' when you're in a jam and it looks like Nissan might need a friendly face... or a lawyer.
Smyrna: From Sleepy Town to Automotive Mecca?
Smyrna Tennessee folks! Sounds like a Greek goddess but it's about to become the Detroit of the South maybe. Nissan's got a 6 million square foot facility there capable of churning out 640,000 vehicles a year. Right now they're only doing about half that. Meunier wants to make Smyrna a 'powerhouse' again. That's like saying I want to be a superhero... but hey gotta dream big right? Maybe they can hire Huell to 'weigh' those cars down with extra features.
Patience My Friends Patience!
Don't get your hopes up for a shiny new Nissan in your driveway tomorrow folks. Meunier's saying it'll take time to ramp up production. 'It cannot happen overnight,' he says. Well duh! Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was a decent automobile trust me. But hey at least they're looking at adding hybrid production and even an Infiniti model. Gotta keep those soccer moms happy right? And those mid life crisis dads? Gotta keep them happy too!
The Tariff Two Step: Dodge and Weave!
Here's where it gets tricky. These tariffs man. Trump's got Nissan doing the tariff two step. They're dodging and weaving trying to figure out how to make more stuff here in the good ol' US of A. Meunier's hoping for a 'compromise' on those auto parts tariffs. A compromise? In this climate? That's like hoping Tuco Salamanca would give you a fair price on your meth. Good luck with that!
Mexico to the Rescue... or Maybe Not?
Nissan's got plants in Mexico too. In 2024 they cranked out nearly 670,000 units with over 456,000 being shipped out. But with these tariffs it's all a big ol' question mark. They lowered pricing on the Rogue and Pathfinder... that's actually a good start to stay competitive. 'Cause if they do it like Badger and Skinny Pete did with their business it will go downhill fast!
Turnaround Time: Can Nissan Pull It Off?
So can Nissan pull off this grand plan? Meunier seems optimistic. He says they have 'good product in the pipeline' and they're going to 'turn it around despite the tariff.' That's the spirit! But remember folks even the best laid plans can go sideways faster than you can say 'Heisenberg.' But hey if they need a lawyer to navigate the legal potholes they know who to call. And you do too!

They should make a car that runs on spite. We'd never run out of fuel!

I hope this means cheaper Nissans! My budget is tighter than Jesse Pinkman's alibi.
