I'll Be Back... With Lower Taxes (Maybe)

Okay listen up. Sarah Connor here reporting from the front lines of…tax policy? Yeah I know sounds thrilling as a dial up modem in 2024. But trust me this is about survival. Turns out even in a world where terminators could show up any minute people are still worried about their damn taxes. President Trump bless his heart tried to strong arm some House Republicans into backing his tax bill. Apparently these guys from blue states are getting their robo underwear in a twist over something called SALT deductions. And before you ask no it's not what you put on your roads in winter.

No Fate But What We Make... Affordable

So what is SALT? State and Local Taxes. See the folks in New York and California they pay a hefty chunk of change to their states and cities. A 2017 tax bill in what I can only assume was a plot by Skynet to destabilize humanity through financial stress capped how much of that they could deduct on their federal taxes at $10,000. Now Trump's offering $30,000. But apparently that's not enough to stop these rebels. They say it's about fairness for their constituents. "A fair SALT deduction is a matter of fundamental fairness..." blah blah blah. You know the drill.

"Let It Go," He Said. Easy for Him to Say...

Trump in his infinite wisdom told these guys to just “let it go.” He even told one congressman “I know your district better than you do. If you lose because of SALT you were going to lose anyway.” Real smooth Don. That’s like telling John Connor to just chill out and let Skynet win. Doesn't work that way. This is about the future! Of…taxpayers? Look I'm trying to keep this analogy alive here.

Come With Me If You Want to…Deduct

The Republican holdouts are trying to sound reasonable. “We share President Trump’s call for unity within the House Republican Conference,” they said in a statement. But then they went on to complain that their states are “donor states consistently subsidizing so called fiscally responsible red states.” It's a classic political standoff. And honestly it's kind of hilarious. You've got a bunch of politicians arguing about tax deductions while I'm over here still waiting for the robots to rise.

It's in Your Nature to Destroy Yourselves…Financially

The real kicker? Some conservatives are also fighting the bill because they want to slash Medicaid even further. “Don’t f around with Medicaid,” Trump reportedly said. It's all a glorious mess. Makes you wonder if Skynet even needs to bother with killer robots. We're doing a fine job of destroying ourselves with taxes healthcare debates and political infighting.

The Taxman Cometh…Eventually

So will this tax bill pass? Who knows. All I know is whether it's terminators or tax season something's always trying to get you. Just remember what Kyle Reese said: “Pain hurts.” Especially when it comes to taxes. Now if you'll excuse me I've got a date with some weapons training. Because even if Congress screws up the economy at least I'll be ready for the robot apocalypse.
