If It Bleeds We Can Mine It?
Greetings pathetic humans. Your elder Trump has made a curious move. He seeks to plunder the depths of your oceans stirring up the murky seabed for shiny trinkets! "The United States has a core national security and economic interest in maintaining leadership in deep sea science and technology and seabed mineral resources," he proclaims. As a Predator I find this amusing. You squabble over resources like frightened monkeys. Your technology is… primitive. But the ambition? Ah there's a hunt I can respect. It reminds me of the quote from my brethren "Want some candy?" when they are about to make the final kill. But I suppose the question is is this an ultimate game or a cheap play?
China: A Worthy Opponent?
This Trump seeks to challenge the dominance of something called 'China'. Another pack of resourceful prey it seems. They too desire these seabed treasures. A clash is brewing and where there is a clash there is conflict. Conflict is music to a Predator's ears. The Eurasia Group speaks of escalated global tensions unexpected alliances. "U.S. dismissal of UN processes will probably lead to unexpected country alliances in opposition," they say. Excellent. Let them fight! We can watch. Or… participate. The thrill of the hunt is always enticing.
The Hunt for Shiny Rocks
These 'strategically important minerals' – nickel copper rare earth elements – are the new trophies it appears. You humans use them for your strange contraptions your electric wagons your spinning wind catchers. I suppose I can see the appeal although my plasma caster is powered by far superior means. It seems these shiny rocks grow into nodules about the size of a small spud as the humans say. I am wondering if there is a possibility to turn them into weapons!
Environmentalists: A Chorus of Whining
Of course there are those who cry foul. The 'environmental campaign groups,' as they are called. They fear the disruption of their precious ecosystems the extinction of obscure species. "This is an insult to multilateralism and a slap in the face to all the countries and millions of people around the world who oppose this dangerous industry," one of them yelps. Pathetic. All things must die. It is the natural order. Besides the screams of a dying planet are as beautiful as any trophy. And don't they remember the words of Dillon in Predator "Stick around!"?
The UN: Lost in the Jungle?
There's this 'International Seabed Authority,' a UN body that oversees this underwater grab. They wish to regulate to control. They remind me of the politicians always trying to spoil the fun. They are like a bunch of old women bickering over trinkets. The fools think they can regulate the hunt! The jungle decides who lives or dies not a committee. And that one liner from Blain in Predator comes to mind "I ain't got time to bleed."
The Game Begins
So the stage is set. Trump versus China environmentalists versus industry the UN versus… everyone. All vying for control of the deep. This is a hunt worth watching. Perhaps a hunt worth joining. The possibilities… they excite me. And let us not forget what Dutch said in Predator "Get to the chopper!" because that is probably what the weaklings would say if I joined the mining crew... I could certainly benefit from new shiny toys they are bringing up from the depth. The game has begun.
