A Whole Lotta Debt Like Peas and Carrots
Mama always said "Life is like a box of chocolates you never know what you're gonna get." Well lately it feels like I keep gettin' the kinda chocolate with the weird filling nobody likes – debt! This fella Larry McDonald from something called "The Bear Traps Report," he's sayin' Uncle Sam might be borrowin' a whole lotta money – like over a trillion dollars! That's more than I made sellin' shrimp with Bubba and that was a heap!
Paper Certificates vs. Shiny Things
Now I ain't no financial wizard but Mr. McDonald says all this borrowin' could make those 'paper certificates' – stocks and bonds he calls 'em – less shiny than say gold. He thinks folks might start movin' their money into things you can actually hold like gold silver and even… well he mentioned agricultural commodities. I reckon that's like peanuts or maybe even shrimp! Jenny would have liked that idea.
Run Bonds Run!
He's worried that all this new debt will make the bond market kinda… jittery. Like when I had to run from those fellas in the truck. Yields movin' around like that – that's not good according to Mr. McDonald. He says it puts pressure on everything. I remember pressure when I was playin' ping pong for the All American team. That was serious business!
Commodities: The New Best Friend?
This McDonald fella he's suggestin' that instead of puttin' most of your money in stocks and bonds – like that old 60/40 thing – maybe folks should put some in things like gold or even wheat. He calls it a "30/30/30/10" split. I just hope that '30' for commodities includes shrimp. I know I'd feel safer with a freezer full of shrimp than a room full of bonds any day.
ETFs: Like a Box of Chocolates But With Commodities
Now I don't know much about gettin' my hands on gold bars or a whole field of corn but he says there are these things called ETFs that do it for you. Like that Invesco DB Agriculture Fund (DBA) and SPDR Gold Shares (GLD) they go and buy all these things for you and you just buy their ETF stocks. It's like magic! Or maybe it's just... complicated. Either way they do it for you!
Treasury to the Rescue... Maybe
Mr. McDonald ain't sayin' the sky is fallin' though. He did mention that the Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is tryin' to help things out. Somethin' about lettin' banks hold more government debt. Which sounds like puttin' more weight on a mule but what do I know? As Mama always said "You have to do the best with what God gave you." And sometimes that's a whole lotta debt.
