LVMH? More Like L WHOA!
Okay folks gather 'round. Seems like even the fanciest of bags can't escape the gravity of… well gravity. LVMH the titan of luxury took a bit of a tumble this week. Their shares plunged like a SpaceX prototype during a rapid unscheduled disassembly or RUD as we like to call it. An 8% drop! That's enough to make even my Dogefather heart skip a beat.
Hermès: From Bags to Riches!
And guess who swooped in like a Falcon Heavy landing? Hermès! Yes the Birkin bag brigade briefly surpassed LVMH in market capitalization. It's like Doge beating Bitcoin only… fancier. I mean congrats to them but let's be real are we talking about colonizing Mars or just getting a really REALLY expensive purse? Priorities people!
Blame it on the Cognac (and Maybe Some Tariffs)
Turns out the fancy booze isn't flowing as freely as it used to. LVMH's wines and spirits took a 9% hit. They're blaming weaker demand in the U.S. and China. I suspect it's a bit more than that. Perhaps the geopolitical tensions are making people nervous about sipping cognac? Or maybe they're just realizing they could buy a Tesla with the same amount of money. Decisions decisions.
Fashion Fades?
Even the core fashion and leather goods division the cash cow making up 78% of profit in 2024 saw a 5% decline. I mean come on people? Who stopped buying handbags? Don't they know that a great handbag can change your whole day (or at least distract you from impending AI overlords)?
Trump's Trade Tornado!
Of course everyone's pointing fingers at Donald Trump's trade policies. Tariffs tariffs everywhere! It's enough to make you want to short the entire luxury market and invest in… well maybe not Twitter. But something equally chaotic and unpredictable! Like Neuralink maybe!
Don't Panic (Yet)!
Look the luxury market might be facing some headwinds but let's not declare the end of the world. After all even I had to sleep on my brother's couch for a few nights when starting out! People will always want shiny things. It's in our nature. The real question is will those shiny things be made by humans or robots? That's what keeps me up at night. And building rockets of course. And sometimes tweeting questionable memes. You know the usual.
