They're coming outta the walls! (With Lawsuits)
Alright people listen up. It's Ripley here and I've seen some things – acid for blood facehuggers chestbursters... but this AI copyright mess? It's a whole new level of corporate slime. Seems Meta the company that keeps tabs on everyone including what you had for breakfast just scored a win against a bunch of authors. Sarah Silverman and Ta Nehisi Coates among others thought Meta was pulling a fast one by using their books to train its Llama AI without asking. Like stealing a power loader without permission!
Fair Use? More Like Fairly Screwed Am I Right?
The judge this Chhabria guy sided with Meta saying it's all 'fair use.' Apparently sucking up every word ever written for your AI is okay if you call it 'transformative.' Reminds me of the Company calling the Xenomorph a 'Level 6 organism' – corporate double speak at its finest. The judge did say that usually you can't just copy stuff without asking but these authors didn't prove that Meta hurt their bottom line. Half hearted arguments? Sounds like someone forgot their pulse rifle on the way to court.
Open Source or Open Season on Authors?
Meta's spokesperson is all smiles saying this is a win for 'innovation' and 'creativity.' Yeah right. Sounds like the Company patting itself on the back while the Nostromo is about to blow. They claim open source AI is transformative. Maybe it'll transform authors into starving artists while Meta rakes in the dough. It's all about the bottom line ain't it? Just like Weyland Yutani.
This Ain't Over Not By a Long Shot
But here's the kicker: the judge made it clear this ruling is just for these 13 authors. He even said the plaintiffs didn't make a good argument. It's like saying the Xenomorph only scratched the paint. He practically *invited* more lawsuits. Also they are still going after Meta for pirating or as I like to call it torrenting their work. Seems the beast has more than one set of claws.
Anthropic's Book Napping Antics
And it gets better. This Anthropic company training its AI Claude got a similar slap on the wrist. 'Transformative use,' blah blah blah. But! They still have to go to trial for allegedly stealing millions of books. Buying a copy after you ripped it off doesn't exactly make you a saint. It's like offering the Xenomorph a sandwich after it's eaten half your crew.
Nuke It From Orbit: It's The Only Way to Be Sure?
So what's the takeaway? The fight's far from over. These AI companies are pushing the limits and authors are starting to push back. This could become a real war! Meta and Anthropic are being really cocky with these stolen materials and may well go to far. Me? I'm stocking up on flamethrowers. Just in case this whole AI thing gets outta hand. You never know when you might need to torch a few rogue algorithms. Stay frosty people.
