Of Course It's The Student Loans Again!
Eh what's up doc? Seems like Uncle Sam's gettin' all Elmer Fudd on defaulted student loans. The U.S. Department of Education just announced they're startin' up those 'involuntary collections' again on May 5th. That's right the ol' Treasury Offset Program is back in action which means they might just swipe your tax refund Social Security or even your federal paycheck! Ain't that a stinker? 'Suffering succotash,' as Sylvester would say.
Collateral Damage: Taxpayers and Student Loans?!
According to Linda McMahon some bigwig over at the Education Department "American taxpayers will no longer be forced to serve as collateral for irresponsible student loan policies." Irresponsible eh? Sounds like someone needs a good carrot...or maybe a whole field of 'em! Apparently the Biden folks can't just magically poof the debt away. Guess it's not as easy as pullin' a rabbit out of a hat.
Back to the Future of Student Loans
They haven't been chasin' after these defaulted loans since March 2020 see? After the pandemic pause ended in September 2023 the Biden bunch gave folks another year of protection from missing payments. But now as Yosemite Sam would say "Time to pay the piper!" Or in this case time to pay back those loans! Rrrraaaascal!
Millions Feeling the Squeeze
We're talkin' over 5 million borrowers in default and another 4 million teetering on the edge of financial disaster! That's a lot of anxious wabbits! The Education Department's gonna send out emails to all those in default in the next couple weeks. So keep an eye on your inbox folks or you might be surprised what you see in there! It may not be a carrot!
Options Options and More Options?!
But hold on there's hope! The feds are offerin' some ways out at least kinda. You can contact their Default Resolution Group and maybe work out a payment plan. Or sign up for income driven repayment or even try to rehabilitate your loan. But if you don't do nothin' they're comin' after that dough! As the Speedy Gonzales says Arriba! Arriba! Andale! Andale! Get on it!
Learn Your Rights Doc!
Some higher education guru named Mark Kantrowitz said "Borrowers who graduated during the pandemic may have no experience with loan repayment so it is important to educate them about the process including their rights and responsibilities." So read the fine print kids! Even if you hated your classes you still gotta pay up. Ain't that a kick in the pants? Now if you excuse me I got some carrots to bury. Th th th that's all folks!
