Judgment Day for Rare Earths?

Alright listen up. Sarah Connor here. I know a thing or two about machines and the systems that control them. And I'm telling you this whole 'rare earth' situation with China? It's not just about cars and robots; it's about the future. Again. They're cutting off the supply of these critical minerals and components and that's like disabling the legs of our defense capabilities. It’s like Judgment Day is coming…but for our supply chains. And we all know how that ends.

Hasta la Vista F 35s?

So China's playing hardball with these rare earth exports. They're putting the squeeze on everyone from auto manufacturers to the Pentagon. Apparently without these minerals we can't even build F 35 fighter jets! It's like trying to fight a Terminator with a water pistol. William Bain from the British Chambers of Commerce said it himself; no samarium no fighter jets. Next thing you know Skynet is buying all the minerals and we're back to fighting killer robots with whatever we can find. Great.

Trump's Trade Tango: A Deal with the Devil?

Trump's folks are talking about easing chip export controls if China releases more rare earths. Sounds like a classic case of 'come with me if you want to live…in a slightly less vulnerable position.' But let’s be honest dealing with China on this is like negotiating with a Terminator. They don't feel pity or remorse or fear. And they absolutely will not stop ever until they get what they want.

Green Channel? More Like a Slow Burn

China's dangling a 'green channel' for EU firms and granting licenses to some US auto giants. Sounds nice right? Wrong. It's a temporary fix like putting a band aid on a Terminator wound. Gracelin Baskaran from CSIS nailed it: defense companies are already freaking out behind closed doors. We need thousands of pounds of these minerals for submarines and fighter jets. What happens when we don't get them? The machines win.

The Price of Survival: Subsidies and Incentives

This Baskaran woman she’s got the right idea. We need to boost our own rare earth production and incentivize buying from allies. Otherwise these rare earth prices will make production unsustainable. It’s like we’re trapped in a loop. We have to find a way to break free and protect our future or it won’t just be the machines coming for us…it’ll be our own reliance on them.

There is no Fate but What We Make...Or Mine Ourselves

Look the defense industry might not be screaming as loudly as the automakers but that doesn't mean they're not worried. They’re just good at keeping secrets unlike some orange faced politicians I know. Henry Sanderson at RUSI points out that we don't produce enough magnets in the West. If we don't get our act together and secure our own rare earth supply we're handing the future over to…well I don't even want to say it. So let's mine our own destiny. Time to show the machines – and anyone else trying to control our fate – that there is no fate but what we make for ourselves. Time to get to work.

We need to start mining these things in our own backyard, ASAP!

Trump started this trade war mess, now we're all paying for it.
