No Fate But What We Make: Or Do We?
Alright listen up. Sarah Connor here. I read this article about the 'Summer Davos' in China and it smells like Skynet in its early stages. Apparently while the U.S. is busy playing world police between Israel and Iran (again!) China's been schmoozing with the 'Global South.' You know the countries the West used to ignore until they needed cheap labor or oil. Now everyone is looking for where they can get the best deal no matter what kind of political BS is going on. As they say in the classics "No fate but what we make." But if we don't watch out we will lose. And the Global South looks to be making some moves.
East Meets South: And the West Goes…West?
A decade ago everything flowed between East and West like a well oiled Terminator. Now? It's all about the Global South hooking up. I guess Skynet – I mean China – is offering better deals than Uncle Sam. They’re talking about a 'changed world order.' Yeah I’ve heard that before usually right before something blows up. According to some fancy pants consultant named Ben the Global South is 'more connected than ever.' Great. More connected to who? Each other or is Skynet behind this. This can only mean one thing: trouble.
Come With Me If You Want to Trade
Premier Li Qiang is urging more trade to reshape the world order. Reshape it how? Into a giant motherboard controlled by Beijing? Some expert named Aparna Bharadwaj said she looks forward to opportunities in the Global South. Well good for her. I'm looking forward to surviving another Terminator attack but we don't always get what we want do we? I'm sure these 'neutral countries' doing business across geopolitical fractures don't even understand the forces at play.
I'll Be Back... for More Market Share
So Summer Davos is making a comeback after some rough years thanks to the pandemic and U.S. China tensions. Figures. Everyone wants a piece of the pie now that AI and the economy are up for grabs. Even Singapore and Vietnam are sending their top guys. They all wanna know what China’s cooking up. The U.S. tariff shock was a 'wake up call' for the Global South. Of course it was. It always takes a crisis to make people diversify. Now they are trying to attract trade by enhancing 'economic competitiveness.' That sounds a lot like preparation for war in my book.
Is This the Future? The Future Is Not Set!
Egypt wants to be in the top 20 in business competitiveness by 2030. Good luck with that. Everyone's trying to get ahead and China's offering a seat at the table. The article ends with a vague threat—sorry 'observation'—that as U.S. China tensions remain unresolved more countries may take the Chinese premier up on his offer to reshape the world. Well if that ain't a Judgment Day scenario I don't know what is. Except Judgment Day keeps happening but we keep on surviving.
There Is No Fate: Except Economic Realities
The report mentions China's fiscal revenue growth stalling and some trade promises from Premier Li Qiang. They're also keeping an eye on Israel and Iran and mainland China and Hong Kong stocks are doing their thing. The Chinese leaders are all getting along talking about spending and trade. I always find that suspicious. This whole thing is one big reminder: the fight for survival never ends. The players just change. Now if you'll excuse me I have some weights to lift. And maybe a server farm to blow up just in case.
