Bill Nye the Science Guy… But Make It Bill Gates
Okay so Bill Gates was in Singapore right? Living his best life probably ordering all the room service. But jokes aside he was actually there for this thing called Ecosperity – basically a sustainability pow wow hosted by Temasek Singapore's state investor. And guess what he talked about? Climate change duh! Like Bill we get it the ice caps are melting faster than my patience in a Valorant match. But he had some interesting things to say so hear me out.
Rich People Problems Global Warming Edition
So according to Billy G rich countries (you know the ones with all the fancy gadgets and carbon footprints the size of Texas) need to get their act together and hit net zero emissions. And here's the spicy take even if the rest of the world doesn't. "There are levels of emissions that are small enough that the temperature worsening actually is not a problem," he said. Okay Bill easy for you to say from your mansion with the eco friendly pool. But hey he's got a point. Someone's gotta lead the way and it's not gonna be my grandma with her reusable shopping bags (bless her heart).
Innovation: The Only Hope We Have Left?
Here's where things get interesting. Bill seems to think that relying on the whole world hitting net zero by 2050 is about as realistic as me hitting Radiant in Valorant. He thinks we need to get bold with investing in innovation. "The notion that the entire world is going to get [to net zero] by 2050 is at this point not realistic." Translation: we need some serious tech breakthroughs if we wanna save this planet. I mean I'm all for innovation as long as it doesn't involve replacing me with a robot streamer. Can you imagine? "Hey guys welcome to the stream! I'm Robo Poki and today we'll be analyzing the stock market while simultaneously solving climate change!"
The Clock is Ticking!
The UN is breathing down everyone's necks about keeping global warming under 1.5°C which means cutting emissions by almost half by 2030 and hitting net zero by 2050. "The sooner we get there the better. [But] we need the examples." Bill said so let's get cooking!
Gates Foundation Goes to Singapore
Apparently the Gates Foundation is setting up shop in Singapore. Bill met with the Prime Minister Lawrence Wong and they chatted about everything from clean energy to vaccines. Basically Singapore's becoming the go to spot for people who wanna save the world. Maybe I should move there and start a sustainable streaming empire. "Hey guys today we're playing Minecraft but with a focus on renewable energy sources!"
So What Now?
Okay so what's the takeaway here? Bill Gates thinks rich countries need to lead the charge on climate change and that innovation is our best bet for hitting those impossible net zero goals. Is he right? Maybe. Is he gonna solve climate change by himself? Definitely not. But hey at least he's talking about it. And maybe just maybe all this talk will inspire someone to invent the next big thing that saves the planet. Or at least invents a robot that can clean my room. A girl can dream right?
