Deja Vu All Over Again? Google Dusts Off the Glass
Right then darlings! Lara Croft here reporting live from the front lines of technological archaeology. Google yes *that* Google is resurrecting Google Glass! Sergey Brin looking a tad sheepish assures us that this time it'll be different. Apparently he's 'learned a lot.' I imagine he has mostly about what *not* to do when launching a face computer. It's like raiding a tomb finding a cursed amulet and then deciding to give it another go after a quick polish. Fingers crossed this time it doesn't turn everyone into sand monsters!
Warby Parker: Specs Appeal or Spec tacle of Disaster?
The new twist? A partnership with Warby Parker the purveyors of hipster eyewear. Their stock price jumped faster than I can scale a cliff face. The plan is to create smart glasses powered by Google's Android XR and Gemini AI. So instead of just seeing the world you can now argue with an AI assistant about whether that's *really* a priceless artifact or just a cleverly disguised rock. Though I’ve seen rocks that were more interesting than some artifacts… or people for that matter!
From Zero to Hero (Hopefully)
Brin admitted that the original Glass flopped due to a 'technology gap' and his own supply chain ignorance. Sounds like my Tuesday afternoons really. Now with the rise of generative AI he believes these glasses can actually be useful. He wants them to assist without 'constantly distracting' you. As if the original Glass wasn't distracting enough! I remember when they first launched I was rappelling down the side of a building with a pair on and nearly decked myself on the wall thanks to a notification. What was the notification you ask? It was an advertisement for cat food. Good times.
The AI Revolution: A Double Edged Sword?
The key ingredient this time around is Gemini Google's flagship AI. Brin claims this will allow for better control and functionality. One can only hope that Gemini doesn't develop a taste for ancient languages and start ordering us all around like some digital Natla. Because nobody likes being told what to do especially by a machine. Although a polite AI that organizes my expeditions and researches artifact locations? I wouldn't say no to that.
Privacy Price Points and Public Perception: The Triple Threat
Google is stepping into a crowded market. Meta's already teamed up with Ray Ban and Apple's rumored to be working on AR glasses. Google's also partnering with a slew of other companies like Samsung and Sony. The original Glass faced privacy concerns (that pesky camera!) high prices and general ridicule. Let's not forget the infamous skydivers who introduced the glasses in 2012! Brin joked about it suggesting a similar stunt at their current venue but wisely added 'we should probably polish the product first.' Indeed Sergey indeed! One wrong move and you'll be remembered in the history books as the guy who launched the world's most expensive fragile paperweight.
Treasure or Trash? Only Time Will Tell
So will Google Glass 2.0 be a groundbreaking innovation or another archaeological blunder? Only time will tell my dears. For now I'll stick to my trusty grappling hook and twin pistols. They might not be as high tech but at least they don't require a $250/month subscription for 'Google AI Ultra.' Though a grappling hook with a built in AI that could predict the structural integrity of ancient ruins *would* be rather useful... Until next time remember: "I make my own luck."

I wonder if they'll have a built-in translator. That would be amazing for traveling.
