Another Monday Another Mystery (and Closed UK Markets!)
Right then another week another continent brimming with financial mysteries. Seems our friends in the UK decided to take a holiday. Smart chaps. I'd rather be dodging booby traps than watching the markets on a bank holiday wouldn't you? The rest of Europe however was a mixed bag like a poorly packed treasure chest. Some bits shined others were just… well let's just say they wouldn't fetch much at auction.
German Dax Rises! (But Don't Get Cocky)
The German DAX managed a bit of a jump nearly half a percent. But as my old pal Sallah always says 'Trust nobody!' A single day doesn't make a fortune any more than a fedora makes me a fortune teller. Meanwhile Italy's FTSE MIB was wobbling like a badly built temple and the French CAC 40 decided to take a tumble. Honestly these markets are more unpredictable than a Nazi with a rocket launcher.
Polish Banking Acquisition: A Deal Shrouded in Enigma
Now this is where things get interesting. Santander that Spanish banking behemoth seems to be shuffling pieces on the board in Poland. Erste Group from Austria has snapped up a hefty chunk of Santander's Polish operations. Makes you wonder what secrets are hidden in those Polish vaults. Probably just zlotys but one can always hope for a lost Ark eh?
Shell and BP: A Corporate Courtship or a Dangerous Liaison?
Shell's eyeing up BP according to those pesky rumour mongers at Bloomberg. A potential acquisition they say. These corporate giants are like rival archaeologists always trying to outdo each other pilfering artifacts. 'Performance discipline and simplification,' says the Shell spokesperson. Sounds like something Belloq would say before stealing the idol. I bet they have a map room with a staff just like mine!
Inflation: A Zero in Switzerland a Scorcher in Turkey!
Inflation is playing a tricky game of hide and seek. Zero in Switzerland which is rarer than a polite Nazi. But Turkey is a whole different story. Inflation there is hotter than the Hovitos tribe ready to shoot you with poisoned darts nearly 38%! Someone get me my whip I have a feeling we are going to need it to tame these numbers. 'Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?'
Central Banks on the Brink: Decisions Looming!
And finally the central banks. Sweden Norway England...all poised to announce their latest interest rate decisions. A collective breath holding. One wrong move and it could trigger a market avalanche! It is just like the temple scene one wrong step on the wrong stone and then the whole place comes crashing down. I am sure I am not the only one who is feeling the pressure. But not as much pressure as the pilot who flew me over the Himalayas. Now that was a close call.
