Unlike those other export crazy countries India's got a secret weapon: its people love to buy stuff! All sorts of stuff. And experts say that that gives India a stronger hand in these trade talks with the U.S. It's like how Shrek's got his ogre strength! A fifth of India's economy came from exports of goods and services in 2023 according to the World Bank. But those other folks like Thailand and Vietnam are way more dependent on sending stuff out which makes them kinda... desperate.

IT's A Service Thing! (Not Just Goods!)

Here's the kicker: the U.S. is mostly worried about the stuff we send them not the *services* we provide. And guess what? India's got a whole lotta IT services going to the U.S. Companies like TCS and Infosys might be safe for now unless things take a turn for the worse. It's like how Shrek's swamp is safe... until someone decides to build a theme park on it! James Sullivan from JPMorgan says that most Indian exports to the U.S. are IT services so if there is a recession that's when those stocks get hit. And that is not good!

Vietnam's Playin' It Cool (Or Is It?)

China's facing a HUGE tariff rate (125%!) and Vietnam might get slapped with a 46% duty. Ouch! So Vietnam's offering to wipe out ALL tariffs. That's like offering someone your last waffle! Even throwing in the syrup. Trump even said Vietnam wants to cut their tariffs down to ZERO if they are able to make an agreement with the U.S.. Vietnam is trying to score that sweet sweet free trade deal. But as Martyrossian from Aubrey Capital said “And remember the bully is always more forgiving of those who succumb earlier to his charm. Those who hang out longer have him licking his chops.” It is like they are bowing to the bully!

Apple's Got A Decision To Make!

Apple might be shipping more iPhones from India to avoid those China tariffs but they might also be eyeing Vietnam's zero tariff offer. Zero tariffs? That's like finding a golden ticket! Now everyone's wondering if they should follow Vietnam's lead and offer even *more* to Uncle Sam. Martyrossian added that India wants its own solution to manufacturing industries and that the U.S Vietnam deal will affect negotiations with the U.S. It’s like that earwax candle that you do not want to think about but it is always there.

The RBI Lowers The Boom!

Just when things were getting tense India's central bank the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) lowered interest rates! They cut the policy rate by 25 basis points to 6%! The lowest since September 2022! And as Sonal Varma from Nomura added the difference in degree of tariffs between India and China is in favor of India which would "make sense" for multinational companies to divert their production to India. All that glitters is not gold but sometimes it’s pretty darn close! As Suresh said investors could hide from the current turbulence by investing in stocks that derive much of their revenues locally instead of large cap exporters. I think that Shrek should invest in that.
