The Dawn of the Robo Pharmacist!
Good news everyone! It seems Walgreens in a move that can only be described as 'futuristic' (or possibly 'ominous,' depending on your perspective) is expanding its fleet of robot powered micro fulfillment centers. These aren't your grandma's pill counters no sir! These are high tech marvels designed to sling prescriptions faster than you can say 'I've got a touch of space dementia!'
Efficiency: A Concept I'm Theoretically Familiar With!
Apparently these robotic pharmacies are intended to free up the human pharmacists to do… well whatever it is they do besides counting pills. Administering vaccines apparently. The idea is to reduce 'routine tasks' (read: anything that could be done by a machine) and eliminate 'inventory waste' (read: expired medicine I could have repurposed for a science experiment!). They claim savings are around $500 million. That's enough to buy a few doomsday devices!
From Public to Private: Like a Roach Motel!
Walgreens is preparing to go private in a $10 billion deal! It's a turbulent time apparently struggling with declining profits and facing fierce competition. So naturally they're turning to robots. Because nothing says 'stable business model' like automating your workforce. Maybe they should hire Zoidberg; he works for peanuts (or occasionally flags)!
The Great Pharmacist Walkout of '23! (Probably Overtime)
Last year disgruntled pharmacists staged walkouts protesting burnout and understaffing. So instead of you know hiring more humans Walgreens is doubling down on robots! I am not a robot! Or am I? A question for the philosophers. The robots are administering 40% more vaccines so perhaps they are better at stabbing than humans. Interesting...
The Future of Pharmacy: Less Human More Chrome!
Walgreens is boasting about increased prescription volume and reduced costs all thanks to their new robotic overlords. Rick Gates said that the centers provide a competitive advantage as independent pharmacies don't have centralized support. But fear not smaller pharmacies! I'm sure I can whip up a cost effective slightly dangerous but ultimately functional robot assistant for you too... for a nominal fee of course!
Errors and Omissions Insurance (For Robots)
Of course relying on robots isn't without its risks. Sophisticated robotics mean sophisticated errors! But hey at least the robots are programmed to lock down and flash red orange lights if they mess up. Better than the time I accidentally created intelligent mustard! According to Walgreens they have seen an overall cost reduction of 13%. I wonder if they have factored in the cost of the inevitable robot uprising?
