Accio Ethical Mining!
Honestly when I heard about President Trump's shall we say *enthusiasm* for acquiring Greenland I nearly choked on my pumpkin juice. It reminded me of Voldemort's obsession with the Elder Wand – misguided and frankly a bit terrifying! But thankfully it seems Greenland has its head on straight much like I did when Harry and Ron were off gallivanting with half baked plans.
No Need to Mine Every Mountain
Greenland's Minister for Business and Mineral Resources Naaja Nathanielsen has the right idea. "We are not necessarily interested in becoming a really great mining country. We just really want 5 or 10 active mines at any given time." Five or ten! It's all about balance isn't it? We can't go charging in like a Hippogriff without a plan. It reminds me of S.P.E.W. – a noble cause but perhaps a bit… overzealous in its initial execution. However the core idea of fair treatment and avoiding exploitation is of upmost importance!
A Western Alternative To China?? Seriously?
Apparently Greenland is positioning itself as a Western alternative to China's rare earth monopoly. Honestly it is more like a political strategy than something that will actually happen. It is always easier to find a boggart to fight with in politics even if there is no real need to do that.
Sustainability is Key Always!
Nathanielsen also emphasized Greenland's high environmental social and governance (ESG) standards. "I think the people of Greenland really support the mining industry… because they have faith in us having a high environmental standard and taking care of local communities." It's about learning from past mistakes isn't it? You know like when I tried to brew Polyjuice Potion in a girls' bathroom… disaster! But we learn we grow and we hopefully don't turn into cats.
The Nordic Way is the Only Way
Eldur Olafsson CEO of Amaroq describes Greenland's jurisdiction as based on “Nordic principles and law.” Trust me as someone who is well versed in laws this is a really good thing. It's like having Dumbledore as your Headmaster – you know things are generally going to be fair and just. Although even Dumbledore had his secrets didn't he?
Mind The Dragons
So while the world clamors for Greenland's resources it seems Greenlanders are wisely prioritizing sustainability and community well being. As Dumbledore said "It takes a great deal of bravery to stand up to our enemies but just as much to stand up to our friends." Or in this case to potentially wealthy but environmentally reckless mining moguls. Good on them I say! Now if you'll excuse me I have to go research the proper way to dispose of dragon dung compost without causing a magical explosion.
