Malibu Dreamhouse Meets Reality Check
Hiya Dreamers! Barbie here reporting live from… well not exactly the Dreamhouse today. Turns out even mega corporations like Amazon are having a 'totally serious' moment. Word on the street (or should I say the information superhighway?) is they're laying off about 100 employees in their devices and services division. You know the folks behind Alexa Echo Ring doorbells and even those super cool Zoox robotaxis! I always say 'Life in plastic it's fantastic!' but sometimes real life throws you a curveball. Or in this case a pink slip.
Alexa Why the Layoffs?
According to Amazon it's all about 'efficiency' and 'aligning with the product roadmap.' Sounds a bit like when I try to reorganize my closet and end up donating half my clothes. Apparently they're trying to streamline things. An Amazon spokesperson Kristy Schmidt said it's a 'difficult decision,' and they're committed to supporting those affected. Which is great! Because nobody wants to feel like they've been tossed into the reject bin of discontinued dolls. "I can be president or a homeless person." Barbie
Dream Jobs Nightmare Cuts
Now they're not saying exactly who got the chop but Reuters (those super serious news folks) broke the story. The good news? Amazon says they're still hiring in the devices and services area. So if you've always dreamed of making Alexa even smarter (or teaching her to say 'Ken is a ten!') there's still hope! Just maybe keep your resume extra polished. Remember "Think positive!" – Barbie.
Andy's Amazon Adventure in Cost Cutting
Apparently Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has been on a mission to trim the fat since 2022 axing a whopping 27,000 jobs! That's like emptying the entire Barbie Dreamhouse of furniture repainting it and then realizing you still need to downsize! The cuts are smaller this year thankfully. It's like going from a full blown costume ball to a casual tea party. Still a party just… smaller. "We girls can do anything right?"
Flatter Organizations and Fewer Managers (Because Who Needs Supervision When You're Fabulous?)
Last year Amazon also decided to simplify things by having fewer managers. The goal was to increase the number of individual contributors by at least 15%. Which in Barbie speak means more time for fabulous projects and less time getting bossed around! Because let's face it everyone knows I'm the boss anyway. "You can do anything! You can be anything!"
Tech's 'Adulting' Phase
Amazon isn't alone in this. Microsoft also announced layoffs cutting around 6,000 employees. It seems even tech giants have to tighten their belts sometimes. It's like when I have to choose between a new convertible and a solid retirement plan. Decisions decisions! But hey even in tough times remember what I always say: "Think positively!" And maybe just maybe start working on that backup plan. Like I don't know becoming a mermaid. "To live in Barbie Land is to be a perfect being in a perfect place." Unless you get laid off then you just get to move to another part of Barbie Land!
Skiddie
I wonder how this will affect Alexa's development? Will she still be able to tell me the weather?
