Like an Onion McMansions Have Layers (of Problems...and Space)
Alright alright settle down! Shrek here your friendly neighborhood ogre giving you the lowdown on these...McMansions. Apparently these fancy schmancy houses from the '80s are making a comeback. Remember those days? Big hair leg warmers and houses that look like they were designed by a committee of fairy tale creatures each with wildly different tastes. These McMansions are like onions they have layers... layers of cheap materials and questionable design choices!
Craftsmanship? More Like Crap smanship!
Kate Wagner some fancy architecture critic lady calls 'em out for using stuff like fake stone and vinyl siding. I'm no architect but even I know that's like putting lipstick on a pig! I mean you got movie theaters and 'great rooms,' sounds like the kind of place Prince Charming would live. All that space but built with sticks and stones sticks and stones may break my bones but cheap material degrade the value of my home!
Space: The Final Frontier (of Clutter)
Seems folks are still craving bigger homes even if they are a bit...tacky. Joel Berner from Realtor.com reckons they're good for families to grow up in even if they’re McMansions. I guess everyone wants their own swamp... I mean bedroom! Americans want more space but for what? More room for Donkey to crash?
Shrinking Families Expanding Houses: What Gives?
Here's the kicker: houses are getting bigger but families are getting smaller. The average family size shrunk from 2.61 to 2.51 since 1993. What are you gonna do with all that extra space?! Invite a dragon over for tea? It's like building a castle when all you need is a cozy little outhouse. If you don't need all that space maybe consider a smaller home. I hear swamps are very affordable.
The Great Housing Crisis: It's Not Just a Fairy Tale Anymore
Thing is there aren't enough houses to go around! There's a shortage see? And construction costs are through the roof! So these McMansions become the only choice it is like choosing between a dragon and Farquaad but the real choice is that there is no choice! Suddenly these McMansions start looking like a 'more affordable' option for families with all that extra space. Now who's the real donkey eh?
So Are McMansions a Fairytale Ending?
So there you have it. McMansions are back because of a housing shortage. Melissa Rubenstein a real estate agent says these are the houses that she sells the most! Is it a good choice? I don't know but I guess it is better than living in Farquaad's dungeon! Just be sure you have enough space for all your stuff and maybe a dragon or two. Shrek out!
