Get Outta My Swamp... er Phone!

Alright alright settle down you donkey brains! Shrek here reporting live from... well my swamp. Apparently folks in Japan are fed up with Google trying to hog all the space on their phones like Donkey trying to hog all the waffles at breakfast. The Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC) just gave Google a big ol' cease and desist order. Seems Google was makin' phone companies prioritize Google Search and Chrome on Android devices like they're the only onion with layers. As if!

Layers of Monopoly... Like an Onion!

Now you might be thinkin' 'What's the big deal Shrek? It's just a search engine.' But hold your horses! The JFTC is saying Google was using its power to squeeze out other search engines kinda like how Lord Farquaad tried to squeeze out all the fairytale creatures. They were makin' deals with phone companies that said 'You want Google Play Store? Then you gotta push Google Search and Chrome!' That's not exactly playing fair is it? It's like saying you can only have my swamp if you agree to listen to Donkey sing all day. No thanks!

Even Fairytale Creatures Need Options!

The JFTC is pretty serious about this. They started lookin' into Google back in October 2023 and even though Google tried to play nice with a 'commitment plan' in April 2024 it wasn't enough. This cease and desist order means Google gotta stop forcing their apps on everyone. It's like telling the Three Blind Mice they gotta start seeing other tailors! Everyone deserves a choice see?

The World's Gettin' Wise to Google's Games

And guess what? Japan ain't the only one gettin' their pitchforks out! Seems the U.S. and the UK are also sniffin' around Google accusing them of bein' a bit too greedy with their search engine powers. A judge in the U.S. even said Google had an illegal monopoly! It's like everyone's finally realized that some companies think they can rule the world like Farquaad thought he could be king just 'cause he had a fancy castle. Newsflash: size doesn't matter.

Google's Gotta Clean Up Their Act

So what does this all mean? Well for starters Google has to stop makin' phone companies shove their search engines down everyone's throats. They also gotta be a bit more generous with their advertising money letting companies pick and choose how they want to do things. It's like giving Donkey a choice between waffles and parfaits. He'll probably still pick waffles but at least he gets a choice! And to make sure Google is playing nice they gotta hire an independent third party to keep an eye on them for the next five years. Talk about babysitting!

Fair's Fair Even for Ogre Sized Tech Companies

Bottom line is even big ogres like Google gotta play fair. Just 'cause you're big and powerful doesn't mean you can push everyone around. Japan the U.S. and the UK are all saying the same thing: give everyone a fair chance! And if Google doesn't listen? Well let's just say they might find themselves face to face with a very grumpy ogre... and trust me you don't want that!
