Raiders of the Lost Data
Right then! News reaches me that Seagate these data storage fellas are planning a 100 terabyte hard drive by 2030. 100 terabytes! Enough space to store all my lecture notes every archaeological dig photo and still have room for a few adventures. They're saying it's because of this newfangled 'Artificial Intelligence' craze. Seems like everyone's chasing after bigger and better data... it reminds me of Belloq's obsession with the Ark. Always wanting more never thinking of the consequences!
Who Needs That Much Data? YOU DO!
BS Teh some bigwig at Seagate is quoted as saying 'Who would need it? Well plenty.' He's right you know. It's always the same. People underestimate the need for bigger storage but bigger is ALWAYS better! It gives a man options. Room to breathe. Room to outrun a boulder or two. Although maybe that’s just me! But lets be honest data is the new treasure and everyone’s trying to get their hands on it.
AI: Friend or Foe? Probably Both.
This whole AI thing is driven by companies like OpenAI Microsoft and Google. All trying to build the best AI Models. Remember what Marcus Brody said? 'This belongs in a museum!' Well so does underestimating a powerful force. AI sounds like another mystical power and if history has taught me anything it's that powerful mystical forces usually come with a hefty price! Data and technology can be the greatest artifacts or the deadliest curses.
The Climate Crusade
But here’s where the plot thickens. All these data centers require a monumental amount of power. They say just a single ChatGPT query guzzles nearly 10 times the juice of a typical Google search. Ten times! It's like trying to power the Temple of the Sun with a pocket watch. It’s not just about the treasure but the cost. We are talking about the earth here. These companies want to fill the world with computers but the world will crumble due to the energy demands.
Renewable Energy: Our Only Hope
Teh claims Seagate is trying to tackle these climate problems by making their factories run on renewable energy. 'We focus on what we can influence.' That's all well and good but I've heard promises before. 'Trust me' is what the snake said to Eve and we all know how that turned out! Still if they can lower the power consumption per terabyte it might just buy us a little more time before this whole AI thing blows up in our faces... or melts the polar ice caps.
Hard Drives vs. Solid State Drives: The Final Showdown
Of course there’s always competition. Solid state drives are nipping at their heels. But Seagate insists their hard drives are more sustainable. More sustainable eh? Reminds me of those stubborn mules I used to ride through the Andes. Not always the fastest but they got the job done and didn't require constant pampering. Whether it be a computer or a mule you've got to pick what suits your needs and conscience. It is the only way to avoid your doom and obtain fortune and glory!
