No Stay? No Way!
Alright let me break this down for you in MIB terms. Apple think of 'em as those Tentacled Brain Aliens from Sector Gamma 9 tried to pull a fast one. They wanted to put a temporary pause on the App Store changes the ones that came about because of their little spat with Epic Games. But the court? Nah they weren't buying it. Said Apple didn't prove why they deserved a time out. In the words of Kay 'A person is smart. People are dumb panicky dangerous animals.' Looks like Apple's panicking a little.
Judge Judy (Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers) Ain't Playin'!
Last month Apple tried to convince the appeals court to hold off on Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers' order. This order basically told Apple to stop charging a commission on payment links inside apps and also to quit telling developers how those links should look. Apple was all like 'This could cost us SUBSTANTIAL SUMS!' Yeah well welcome to the real world where sometimes you gotta play fair slick. Remember what I said to Mikey 'Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.' Apple clearly needed a better argument.
Developer's Delight: Freedom Rings (and Links)!
Now developers like Amazon and Spotify are having a field day. They've updated their apps to bypass Apple's hefty 15% to 30% commission. Amazon's Kindle app even has this bright orange 'Get Book' button that takes you straight to their website for payment. It's like 'Boom! In your face Apple!' Makes me wanna grab a neuralyzer and erase some bad memories... specifically those memories of paying too much for apps.
Cook's Cooked? Apple's Next Move
Tim Cook Apple's big cheese said they're gonna appeal the ruling. They're not giving up that easily see? But the rejection of their request to stay the changes means those changes are sticking around for now. It's like chasing a Bugg with no legs. Apple violated the original court order from the Epic Games trial. The judge said Apple mislead the court and ordered them to stop imposing its commissions immediately. 'We are disappointed with the decision not to stay the district court's order and we'll continue to argue our case during the appeals process,' says Apple spokesperson but do we believe them?
Epic Win for Sweeney: No More Apple Tax!
Meanwhile Tim Sweeney the head honcho at Epic Games is doing a victory dance. He posted on social media 'The long national nightmare of the Apple tax is ended!' Good for him. But listen even with all this celebrating the fight ain't over. We gotta stay vigilant keep an eye on these big companies make sure they're not trying to pull any more intergalactic shenanigans. "As we've said before we strongly disagree with the district court's opinion. Our goal is to ensure the App Store remains an incredible opportunity for developers and a safe and trusted experience for our users," Apple says. Like I told the Pawny 'Sometimes the truth is stranger than science fiction.' That truth here is gonna be stranger than ever!
Keep Your Neuralyzers Ready!
So what's the takeaway here? Big companies will try to bend the rules but sometimes justice prevails. And remember kids always keep your neuralyzers handy. You never know when you'll need to wipe away the memory of paying too much for a game or app. This just in... I think I'm gonna need to neuralyze myself to unsee this whole situation. But as my partner K always says "Protecting the Earth from the scum of the universe".
