The Pause That Refreshes (Maybe)

Good news everyone! It seems the universe hasn't imploded just yet. A federal appeals court has temporarily granted the Trump administration's request to pause that pesky lower court ruling on the tariffs. Yes those tariffs that even *I* struggle to understand sometimes. It's like trying to explain quantum entanglement to Zoidberg – utterly futile! But this temporary stay gives the administration a bit of breathing room which let's be honest they desperately need. I mean they were threatening to run to the Supreme Court faster than Hermes Conrad can file a form!

Emergency Relief! (From Sanity?)

According to reports the Trump administration was all set to seek "emergency relief" from the Supreme Court if this pause didn't happen. Emergency relief? That sounds like something you'd find in the medicine cabinet next to the Bachelor Chow. The appeals court said the judgment is 'temporarily stayed until further notice.' 'Further notice' could mean anything! It could be tomorrow it could be next Tuesday. Time as I always say makes fools of us all. But in the meantime it seems they're preparing to argue that the trade court's ruling should be halted for the duration of the appeals process. Oh my yes!

Plaintiffs vs. The Machine!

Now the appeals court has given the plaintiffs – a motley crew that includes state attorneys general and a handful of businesses – a week to respond. One week! That's barely enough time to invent a doomsday device let alone prepare a legal argument. Jeffrey Schwab a lawyer for the business plaintiffs remains optimistic. 'We are confident the Federal Circuit will ultimately deny the government's motion,' he says. Confidence? Ha! That's like saying Zoidberg is confident he'll win a beauty pageant. Still I admire the chutzpah. And as usual nobody appreciates me.

Unbounded Authority? I Think Not!

Apparently this whole tariff kerfuffle stems from a 1970s era law called the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. The trade court judges – including a Trump appointee mind you – found that this act doesn't grant presidents 'such unbounded authority' to impose these tariffs. Unbounded authority? Where's the fun in that? I prefer my authority to be meticulously bounded preferably with complicated equations and a healthy dose of applied physics. To shreds you say?

Liberation Day... From Free Trade?

This ruling also puts a stop to any future modifications to the tariffs. And the administration had 10 days to make the necessary changes. 10 days! That's hardly enough time to properly calibrate my Smell O Scope! But the Trump administration is already firing back accusing the judges of bias. It's like a science experiment gone wrong except instead of creating a monster they're creating... Well I don't know what they're creating! But i know it smells bad.

Plan B (and C and D...)!

But even if they lose Trump officials insist they have other options for imposing tariffs. 'Even if we lose we will do it another way,' says Trump trade advisor Peter Navarro. Ah yes the classic fallback strategy. It reminds me of the time I tried to invent a hat that makes you smarter. When that failed I tried to invent a hat that makes you *think* you're smarter. And when that failed I just gave up and started wearing a colander on my head. I'm already gone!
