Deja Vu All Over Again

Right let's see. Another ceasefire courtesy of Mr. Putin. This time it's a grand gesture for the 80th anniversary of the Allied victory in World War II. Three whole days! From May 8th to May 10th. One can almost hear the doves cooing... or is that just the sound of missiles being repositioned? It reminds me of that time I found a 'peace offering' from a tribe in Borneo – turned out to be a cleverly disguised poison dart launcher. I suspect this might be a similar scenario. 'All military actions are suspended,' they say. Famous last words if you ask me. I've heard more convincing promises from double crossing mercenaries in the Himalayas.

Who's Buying This?

The Kremlin in its infinite wisdom expects Ukraine to follow suit. 'Russia believes that the Ukrainian side should follow this example,' the statement declares. Oh the audacity! It's like expecting a cornered tiger to politely request a tea break. And the cherry on top? 'In the event of violations by the Ukrainian side Russia's armed forces will give an adequate and effective response.' Translation: 'We'll find any excuse to keep doing what we're doing.' Honestly I've seen more genuine attempts at reconciliation between rival factions fighting over a dusty relic in the middle of the Sahara.

Fool Me Twice…

Of course this isn't Putin's first attempt at a 'peaceful' pause. Remember that 30 hour Easter ceasefire? A resounding success I'm sure. Each side accused the other of violations naturally. It's a classic game of 'he said she said,' only with tanks and artillery. It reminds me of that time I was betrayed by Natla I should have known better. This time I am not so easily fooled. The question is: who is this charade REALLY for?

Trumped Up Motives?

Ah enter President Trump. Apparently the Kremlin hopes these gestures will signal to the U.S. that Russia is still interested in peace. It's a bit like offering a slightly tarnished artifact to a museum curator – hoping they won't notice the missing pieces. Trump though seems to be getting a bit impatient especially after that deadly attack on Kyiv. He's voicing concerns about being 'just tapped along.' I can see why. It's the geopolitical equivalent of being led on a wild goose chase for a mythical treasure that doesn't exist.

Ukraine's Wary Eye

Unsurprisingly Ukraine and its European allies aren't exactly buying tickets for this performance. They've seen this play before and they know how it ends – usually with more explosions and broken promises. Washington has even threatened to pull the plug on its peace efforts unless there's 'real progress.' 'Real progress,' eh? That's a rare artifact indeed in these circumstances rarer than the Dagger of Xian I'd say!

The Croft Conclusion

So what's the verdict? Is this a genuine attempt at de escalation or just another act in a long running geopolitical drama? My gut tells me it's the latter. As my dear Winston would say "A little less conversation a little more action." And by action I mean genuine commitment to peace not just empty declarations. But as always I will be watching. Because in this world the only thing more dangerous than a hidden tomb is a poorly negotiated peace. And I've seen enough of both to know the difference.
