Trump Card or Bluffing?
Right let's get one thing straight. When someone says 'total commitment,' I usually check for hidden daggers. NATO's Secretary General Mark Rutte assures us that the U.S. and *ahem* President Trump are fully on board. Apparently this 'total commitment' comes with a teensy weensy expectation. Like finding a priceless artifact in a dusty tomb there's always a catch isn't there? This time it's the minor detail that European and Canadian coffers aren't overflowing with enough defense dosh. 'What was that? The U.S. expects us to equalize what they are spending?' It sounds like the set up to a rather complicated treasure hunt doesn't it? I swear sometimes I feel like I'm deciphering ancient prophecies just to understand international politics. It's not just about fairness apparently but amid the "continuing threat from Russia". It is "necessary".
The 5% Solution: More Bang for Your Buck or Just More Bucks?
So the bigwigs at NATO have decided that a 5% GDP defense spend is the way to go by 2035. Now I've raided tombs with smaller budgets than that. 'Can Germany afford a 5% NATO defense spending target?' Well can they afford not to? It seems a bit steep even for countries that aren't dodging booby traps on a daily basis. But hey at least everyone's pledging to hike defense spending. Whether they'll actually deliver is another matter entirely. Remember what Winston Churchill said 'Never give in never give in never never never never' in other words 'Actions speak louder than press releases.'
Stop Worrying Start Spending!
Rutte's sage advice? 'Stop worrying so much.' Easier said than done when you're potentially facing down rogue states and economic crises. He wants everyone to focus on investment plans boosting the industrial base and keeping the support flowing to Ukraine. All while I imagine trying to keep their own economies from collapsing under the weight of all this spending. 'Running around worrying about the U.S. they are with us' he says. It's like trying to navigate a flooded tomb with a faulty torch isn't it? You need a plan and steady hand.
The Good the Bad and the Broke
Ah the classic scenario. Some countries like Poland and Estonia are already splashing the cash on defense making them the teacher's pets. Others like Canada and Spain are struggling to even hit the measly 2% target. It's a bit like my expeditions really. Some are flush with ancient gold and others are just... well full of bats. Spain predictably is balking at the 5% target but the Netherlands' Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans is having none of it. 'I don't think Spain gets an exception' he scolds. It's always entertaining to watch the political posturing isn't it? The political chess game reminds me of trying to outwit a particularly cunning sphinx.
Red Carpets and Empty Promises
Trump's showing up for a red carpet ceremony and dinner. He's apparently skeptical of gatherings like NATO seeing them as 'talking shops that lack substance.' Well at least he's consistent. He's like that one artifact everyone wants but is too much hassle to actually acquire. Lithuania's Foreign Minister Kestutis Budrys thinks Trump's presence is proof that 'NATO is a strong alliance.' If you say so! I guess a shiny photo op can't hurt. The Kings and Queens of the Netherlands and their red carpet ceremonies make me question the meaning of NATO all together.
Joint Statements and Finger Crossing
The big finale? A joint statement committing to the 5% defense spending increase. Whether that commitment will translate into actual action remains to be seen. For now I'll remain cautiously optimistic. After all as my old friend Winston Churchill once said 'I am an optimist. It does not seem much use to be anything else.' And as I always say: 'We all make choices. But in the end our choices make us.'
