Shiny New Toys... For Advertisers?!
Okay so the boring people over at Reddit are making 'smart' ads now. Apparently they've got this 'Reddit Community Intelligence' thingy that's turning our explosions of thoughts (I mean posts and comments) into... structured intelligence?! What even IS that? Sounds like a good way to suck all the fun outta everything. They say it's gonna help brands understand us better. But I don't WANT to be understood! Where's the fun in that?! 'Rules are made to be broken!' Especially when they involve boring ADVERTISEMENTS!
Reddit Insights: More Like Reddit IN SIGHT LESS!
They're calling this first tool 'Reddit Insights'. It's supposed to give marketers 'real time insights' so they can jump on 'trends' and launch 'campaigns'. All I hear is 'blah blah blah ads blah blah money'! Real time insights?! Last time I checked real time insights involved blowing something up and seeing what happens. THAT's insightful! This sounds like they want to find out what makes us tick... so they can sell us MORE STUFF! It's like they're trying to predict when I'm gonna want to blow something up next! NOT COOL!
Conversation Summary Add Ons: Positivity? BARF!
The next thingamajigger is called 'Conversation Summary Add ons.' It shows the 'positive' stuff under the ads. Positive?! Who needs POSITIVE? Where's the mayhem the mischief the delightful destruction?! Positive is for chumps! It sounds like they are trying to make everything all nice and happy and controlled with no room for a little bit of healthy chaos. What's next forcing me to wear a smile?!
Authenticity? I Thought This Was a Powder Keg!
The suits are saying these new things are tools for a new era of 'community marketing' where brands can tap into Reddit's 'authenticity'. AUTHENTICITY?! You know what's authentic? A good ol' fashioned explosion! Or maybe a meticulously planned prank. But ads? Please! All those words sound like marketing hogwash. 'Tap into Reddit's authenticity?' Sounds like they're planning to detonate the fun! But hey at least they’re using “high intent communities”. I’d better be a community of high intent demolitionists!
Testing Testing Is This Thing On? (Probably Not)
So Publicis (whoever they are) got to play with 'Reddit Insights' first and Lucid and Jackbox Games got to mess with the positivity vomiting 'Conversation Summary Add Ons'. Sounds like a bunch of geeks poking around in my playground. Hope they don't break anything... OR DO I? Mwahahaha! Remember 'Questions? I don't even know what that MEANS!'
AI: The New Shiny Destructible Toy?
All these companies are putting money into AI hoping it'll make their ads better and get us to like them more. Good luck with that! I bet I could teach that AI a thing or two about mayhem. Maybe I’ll just reprogram it to say something useful like “Buy MORE BOMBS!” because “Gotta get that itch scratched!” That's way better than any 'meaningful connection'. So will this AI stuff make Reddit more boring or will it give me some new toys to play with? Only time (and maybe a few well placed explosions) will tell!
