Turns out China's been getting its precious boom-boom dust from Myanmar, but now the party's over thanks to a civil war and some very unhappy rebels! Whoops!
Turns out China's been getting its precious boom-boom dust from Myanmar, but now the party's over thanks to a civil war and some very unhappy rebels! Whoops!

Shiny Rocks Dodgy Deals!

Okay people Jinx here! Turns out everyone's favorite superpower China has been playing hide and seek with… dirt? Yeah rare earth metals whatever. Apparently they're super important for making all those fancy boom boom toys and glowy screen thingies. But here's the kicker: China's been getting its stash from Myanmar! Who saw that coming? It’s like Pow Pow getting her ammo from… uh… well somewhere equally surprising! They were getting like 57% of their shinies from there! Five ty SEVEN! That's more than Vi gets punches in a bar fight.

Myanmar: The Forgotten Boomtown!

So Myanmar was pumping out the good stuff like dysprosium and terbium. Sounds like something Dr. Mundo would name his pets right? But apparently these are the VIPs of the heavy rare earth world. And guess who’s been hoarding them? China! They've basically got a monopoly which means they can charge whatever they want for these shiny rocks. Smart but also kinda… meh. It's like Silco holding all the shimmer. Not cool man not cool.

Environmental Kaboom!

Here's where it gets messy. These rare earths come from something called "ionic adsorption clay." Sounds boring but the way they get the metals out is by dumping a bunch of chemicals on it. BOOM! Except not in a fun way. We're talking toxic sludge and sad mutated fishies. China used to do this in their own backyard but then they got all eco conscious (for like five minutes) and shipped the mess over to Myanmar. Talk about outsourcing your problems eh? It's like blaming Fishbones for all the explosions... wait a minute...

Rebel Yell!

Plot twist! Myanmar's got a bit of a civil war brewing. And these rebel dudes the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) decided they wanted a piece of the shiny rock pie. So they went and took over half the rare earth mines! Talk about a power move! Now the prices are going crazy and China's sweating bullets. Serves 'em right for relying on a place that's about as stable as my mental state after a sugar rush!

Uh Oh Supply Chain Snafu!

So now China's rare earth supply is drying up faster than a puddle in the Sun. They're trying to find new places to get their fix like Malaysia and Laos. But those countries are all about the environment which means China might have to you know not destroy everything in the process. What a concept! Maybe they should just ask Ekko for some time rewinding tech to undo all the damage? Nah too easy!

Lessons From a Boom

China's rare earth gamble is a cautionary tale for everyone else. Turns out wrecking the planet for shiny stuff isn't such a hot idea in the long run. Who knew right? Guess everyone should listen to Jinx more often. I’ve always got the best (and loudest) solutions! Now if you'll excuse me I've got some rockets to paint...and maybe a few government buildings to 'redecorate'!
