Bankruptcy? We've Seen Worse!
Well hello there! Indiana Jones here back from dodging boulders and deciphering ancient texts to bring you the thrilling saga of… regional sports networks? Turns out treasure isn't always gold and jewels. Sometimes it's a winning business model! These Main Street Sports Group folks they've been through the wringer – bankruptcy debt scaling back. Sounds like one of my Tuesday afternoons! But like any good adventurer they dusted themselves off and found a new path. Remember what Lao Che said 'Anything goes for a price!' In this case the price was some serious restructuring but it seems to have paid off.
Double the Trouble Double the Fun!
FanDuel Sports Network formerly known as Bally Sports – sounds like a villain from one of my adventures – has doubled its paid subscribers in just eight weeks! Nearly 650,000 strong and aiming for a million by year's end. That's more fans than I've had snakes in my path! Apparently people are willing to pay to watch their favorite teams. Who knew? I mean I'd rather be decoding hieroglyphics but each to their own. The point is they are winning and they are winning big!
Amazon to the Rescue!
Now how did they do it? Well it seems they've partnered with the big boys: Amazon's Prime Video SB Nation and Yahoo Sports. Smart move! Like finding the right guide in a treacherous jungle. Amazon eh? I've had my share of run ins with corporate giants. Remember Donovan? He chose poorly! But these guys seem to be playing it smart. More platforms more eyes more treasure! They are averaging 250,000 daily users and about a million monthly users since the start of the 2025 MLB season.
Time Flies When You're Watching Balls!
And get this folks are actually sticking around to watch! Average watch time per game is up 9% to a whopping 92.5 minutes. That's longer than it took me to escape that Peruvian temple! Someone mentioned that "efficient acquisition program" is bringing in the fans and the teams themselves are pitching in too. Teamwork makes the dream work. "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?" says the fans. It is because I am on TV now!
Pay TV Blues!
But hold on it's not all sunshine and stolen artifacts. These regional sports networks are facing the same problem as everyone else: the dreaded exodus from pay TV! People are cutting the cord faster than I can swing my whip! And the pay TV companies aren't happy pushing back on contracts. It's a tough landscape like navigating a minefield. But as Lao Tzu said "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." In this case several very lucrative streaming partnerships.
The Price is Right? Maybe Not!
Now here's the rub: FanDuel Sports Network isn't exactly cheap. $19.99 a month for one network? Ouch! That's more than I'd pay for a decent fedora! Apparently those pesky pay TV contracts are to blame. But they're testing out lower price points. Hopefully they find the sweet spot. Because even the most dedicated fans have their limits. After all even Indiana Jones has to watch his budget! 'We’re progressing on our mission to reinvent the local sports media landscape by delivering a new standard for teams and their hometown fans while also elevating the visibility of our team partners'. As I always say: 'It belongs in a museum'.
