Wake Me When You Need Me: A Blast From the Past
Alright Spartans gather 'round. Heard some whispers about a 'Pride Month' thing. Turns out some dude named Kai Cameron not to be confused with that one Spartan who always lost his helmet recreated this ancient commercial. It's got Hilary Duff you know the 'Lizzie McGuire' chick telling folks not to be calling each other 'gay' like it's a bad thing. Like calling a plasma rifle 'jammed' when you really mean 'useless against Hunters.' This ad apparently lives 'rent free' in this Cameron guy's head. Mine's usually occupied by Cortana's sass and the best way to flank a Zealot but hey to each their own.
Cult Following: I Need a Weapon
People are going nuts over this thing. Saying Hilary Duff 'ended homophobia' and deserves a 'Nobel Peace Prize.' I didn't even know those existed probably because I'm too busy saving the galaxy from genocidal aliens. Seems like this ad which they say is now a 'cult classic' has stuck with a whole generation. They probably watched it instead of training. No wonder we lost Reach. But hey if it stopped some kids from being jerks I guess that's one less thing I have to shoot… metaphorically of course. Although a Needler to the kneecaps sends a pretty strong message.
Think B4 You Speak: Words are your Ammunition
This 'Think B4 You Speak' campaign masterminded by some group called GLSEN was all about stopping people from using 'gay' as an insult. They even got Wanda Sykes involved. She sounds like someone Cortana would get along with. Apparently back in 2008 social media was still in diapers and TV was king. Makes you wonder how humanity ever got anything done. But hey they saw an opportunity and ran with it. Like a Warthog on a straightaway. Their goal: to make people think twice before being dicks. A noble cause I suppose. Unless you're a Covenant Elite. Then all bets are off.
Viral Before Viral Was Cool: Lucky I Guess
Apparently this Duff commercial became a 'viral moment' way before anyone knew what a 'viral moment' even was. It blew up on Facebook and YouTube which back then were probably just glorified email machines. The guy who started GLSEN Kevin Jennings is saying he never thought people would still be talking about this ad 20 years later. Well pal I'm still talking about the Flood and no one wants to hear that. But hey data shows the ad actually worked! Fewer kids are hearing 'that's so gay' as an insult. That's like saying fewer people are getting plasma burns. Progress people progress!
Burned Into Your Mind: This is the Way
This Duff ad has been popping up everywhere. Sabrina Carpenter quoted it some comedian asked about it and even Bratz dolls recreated it. Bratz dolls? What is this a crossover episode? People are even selling Duff themed apparel on Etsy. Humans love to make t shirts. Someone calls it is burned into your mind to have activism mixed with camp made it so iconic. Sounds like it really stuck with people even those who aren't part of the LGBTQ+ community. One person said it 'made me an ally'. I guess Hilary Duff can add 'inspirational diplomat' to her resume. Maybe she can talk some sense into the Arbiter.
Representation Matters: We Trade One Villain For Another
Folks are saying it'd be tough to make an ad this impactful today what with all the different ways to get your message out. Apparently there's more LGBTQ+ representation in media now but some groups like transgender people are still lagging behind. And it's tough out there. Funding for these groups is drying up and some politicians are trying to roll back progress. Sounds like fighting the Covenant all over again. But hey if this old ad proves anything it's that a little effort can go a long way. Now if you'll excuse me I have a galaxy to save. Again. And I am running out of bubble gum.
